Post your views and questions about the Akai MPC2500

I got this used, in like new condition. I'm new at mpc's.
This is Version 1.00B (!!!)
I have tried to update to 1.24 twice: both times got "wrong card" error.

The card is a new SanDisk Ultra II type I 2GB. It works with the mpc, since I loaded from and saved to it in the few minutes I tried the unit.

I formatted the card, and loaded the MPC2500.bin file from akai usa. (The first time I tried to update, I loaded it from akai japan instead, since the usa site was having problems, but the current one on there is from the usa site. Neither has worked, which indicates that the file itself wouldn't be corrupted.).

When looking at the card on the computer it shows just 2 folders:
FLASHY (which apparently is from the formatting) and
MPC2500.bin (which is what it's supposed to be according to Akai)

I opened the card on the mpc, and saw in the ROOT directory:
FLASHY and
osMPC2500 (which is different name from that above)

AND YET I STILL GET THE "WRONG CARD" MSG IN THE OS UPDATE SCREEN

NOTE: the only thing I did differently from official procedure, was that I used a card reader to copy the MPC2500.bin file to the CF card.
I did this because I don't have a computer and have to pay to use an internet cafe for things like this (university computers don't allow it).
However, a file is a file, so I don't see what difference it would make...........except that the card has to be reinserted to the mpc before the updating power-up.
The official procedure is to leave the card in the mpc and use the USB function to connect direct to computer.
I don't see how that would be an issue, but I mention it for completeness for those here with technical expertise.

Would it matter, since the version is so old.......would I maybe need to install an early upgrade first, and then upgrade from that to v1.24????????

I very much appreciate any tips/info/experience that may be offered.

I'm having problem with the 1.24 OS, i installed it yesterday, it seems to work fine but it takes a whole lotta time to chop little sample, and dont succeed to chop bigger one, the "wait" message stay there and there's nothing i can do. I wrote this directly to akai people via akaipro.com, im waiting for a comeback. I know this doesn't answer your question but that was a good thread to say this. So if any1 out here can help us, HOLLER.

- I ain't using any HD
- 16mb ram
- and i dont know which version i had before, cuz im wondering the same thing as to know if i had to install earlier version before

for some reason the only card that works everytime is the original akai cf-card.
if you use some third party card then make sure to format it in the mpc and not in the computer!!! the mpc 2500 seems to use a little weird fat filesystem that is not fully compatible with the windows fat filesystem.

also, like mentioned above there is more than one way to load the os:
1. hold window key while booting should start the os loader if there is an os file in the root of the cf-card.
2. just loading the os file from the load page (the file can be anywhere on a cf-card or internal hdd and the mpc will warn you that you are attempting to load an os file).

after upgrading akai recommends to format the internal harddisk (if there is any) and cf-cards with the mpc again.

the different names for the os file are no problem, just make sure that it is version 1.24

and yes, the chop shop is waaaaay slower than on previous versions, mainly because they added the ability to open stereo chop shop files made with a mpc5000. and no, we cannot chop in stereo now on the mpc2500 because akai claims the processor is to weak for this.

So basically the "new" chop shop 2.0 has absolutely no benefit to anyone unless they need to upload chops done in the mpc 5000? Wow, that's weak if you ask me. :D

OS1.24 Chop Shop feature

Having just upgraded to the said OS system I am shocked and horrified to find that despite rectifying the errors and bugs of OS1.23, the new Chop Shop 2 save and load facility has slowed the very usefulness of chop shop in MPC2500!!!!!

A 10s sample takes a colossal 29s to chop in OS1.24 compared with 1.3s in OS1.23.

A 3m10s sample will take just under 9m to chop in OS1.24 compared to a mind blowing 16s in OS1.23.

I understand Akai is amining to please, but in doing so (in this case) you've destroyed the usefulness of this invaluable feature for us MPC2500 users. PLEASE PLEASE RECTIFY THIS PROBLEM. At least give us the 'choice' as to whether we want to SAVE or LOAD Chop Shop 2 compatible samples - in which case we pay the price for our choice.
Please put this problem right.

I'll take the bug fixes of OS1.24 and happily do away with the so called 'new/changes'

Hey Upright.
Yer... Tried the JJOS Free some time back. Wasn't overly impressed. I thought it took away some of the useful features of the Akai OS and added a load of other 'cramped window' options. Besides, the JJOS is quite buggy also - I'd go as ear to say more so.

The MPC concept is supposed to be about simplicity; you know, getting the job done in quick time. I may as well pull out the Mac and appropriate software to do the kind of 'squint' editing involved with the JJOS.

Not dissin' or anything, just like the simplicity of Akai OS1.24, it works for me, but without that Chop Shop 2.0 compatibility rubbish.

Cool man, I respect your opinion. I haven't had any problems with the JJ menus/windows, they just work differently than Akai's OS. I honestly feel like the JJOS is faster in all aspects, but thats just me. The Akai OS IMO was alot buggier that the JJOS,....in fact I've never had a bug or issue with the JJOS it's rock solid. On the other hand, there were many times I'd be editing a sample or chopping with the Akai OS and I would get moved to different screens and lose all the work I was doing. But if the Akai OS works better for you, then by all means don't let anyone stop you from using it. :D
