Post your views and questions about the Akai MPC2500

Does anybody know what type of balanced outputs the MPC2500 uses? My guess would be it's what some call a pseudo-balanced output, where you just have anti-phase signals on the hot and cold rather than using a transformer. I'm guessing most music instruments will use pseudo-balanced and only true balancing/DI boxes will give a transformer balanced output...

I want to connect it to unbalanced inputs and the correct wiring differs depending on how the output circuit works. For anybody who doesn't understand the differences look at page 26 of this:
http://www.vandenhul.com/userfiles/docs ... rposes.pdf

A fairly safe, usable in all situation solution is to solder a 100Ohm resister between the cold and shield.

As far as I know those are Balanced outputs you would have to use Mono sounds to have unbalanced sounds to come out the one side of the outputs.

Alright cool! Your the one asking the question not me so you answered your own question then.

No I haven't answered my own question. Read that link I provided if you want to understand more, although just searching Wikipedia for balanced audio might give you something more easilly understandable for somebody with no technical grounding whatsoever.

School me then newbie since I have no technical grounding and tell me how you can't tell the difference between Mono 1/4 plugs & Stereo 1/4 plugs and what they plug into on Page 26 that you so stated?

Like I said before and I will say it again you want Mono Sample to play out one side of the MP then sample in Mono and pan Hard Left or Hard Right you want Stereo sample then sample in stereo. MPC has balanced outputs you want it to be unbalanced then you have to convert your samples.

You can put Mono 1/4 plugs into the MPC's Balanced Outputs and no matter what it's Stereo.
You put Stereo Plugs into the MPC's Balanced Outputs and no matter what it's Stereo.

WE ARE NOT TALKING LEFT AND RIGHT STEREO!!!! WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A BALANCED AND UNBALANCED OUTPUT! JUST BECAUSE BOTH STEREO AND BALANCED SIGNALS USE A TRS JACK DOESN'T MEAN THAT ARE THE SAME!!!!!

There are two main ways of wiring a balanced to unbalanced connection depending on if the balanced output stage using a transformer for balancing (often considered true balanced) or whether you are just using an op-amp inverter to give you the signal in anti-phase to the hot signal (plus obviously a buffer op-amp to keep them coincident.)

It's all explained in detail in the Remarks after page 26, where it also gives you three different wirings depending on the type of balanced output used.

What isn't mentioned there is that it is usually recommended to use Fig.2 but rather than linking between cold and ground on the balanced connector you would put a 100R resister in its place. This would not give you optimum performance but would be safest to use in any situation.

So let's word this better. You want to know which type of Balanced Outputs the 2500 uses? So you think that there is a possibility that it's Unbalanced Output but they made it a Balanced Output by adding something to make it Balanced?

Plus the 500 and 1000.

But what's your point?

Re-read what I typed. If your trying to run the MPC's Balanced Outputs to a Unbalanced Input then you need to run 1/4 TRS MONO or STEREO out of the MPC and RCA's to your Unbalanced Inputs.

Using a TS jack would effectively be forcing you to use the woring configuration recommended for cross-coupled balanced outputs (also suitable for transformer outputs according to most people.) Really not recommended if the use quasi-balanced by just using an inverting amplifier on one half of the signal, which really wouldn't surprise me knowing Akai/Numark.

Going to email Akai and get a definitive answer on how they have worked their balanced outputs, had hoped somebody on here would know for definite. Maybe it would be best just to use the headphone out and split it for now, as that's obviously unbalanced left and right by nature...

I think no one knows cause you haven't clearly specified what it is you are trying to figure out and what you are trying to achieve.
By kazakore Thu Mar 19, 2009 8:33 pm
I have clearly asked whether the circuitry that provides the balanced outputs works on a balancing transformer, cross-coupled output stage or a pseudo-balanced op-amp circuit, and thus which balanced to unbalanced wiring standard is most recommended.

You don't seem to understand that, depending on the type of circuit used to give a balanced output, the type of wiring best used differs.
