On my xl, I could find an empty spot by hitting a pad to see if there was anything on there already. As soon as I found an empty pad, I knew I could assign a sample. On the 2500, it just shows you what note the pad is, but doesn't play any sound.
you're right. when you hit a pad with the "keep or retry" window open, it doesn't play whatever's on that pad.
another thing that bugs me a little bit with the 2500 as opposed to the 2000xl, is that with the 2000xl if you were in the load screen, you could hit the pads and it would play them. on the 2500, the only time in the load screen where you can hit a pad and it will play a sound is after you load a sound to memory and it's asking you to assign the sound to a pad. once you assign that sound to a pad, once again you can't play the pads.
the reason that bugs me is because the way i work is that i find a sample, chop it up and then add drums to it. after loading a drum sound to a pad, while in the load screen i'd hit the pads that i was using for the melody just to see if the drum sound i chose sounds right with the other samples. if after loading it i decided that i could find a better drum that matched, i'd continue searching. can't do that now.
