I really think Grid edit need a make over , the editing option are all over the place , emty F key funtions and so on it does not really "flow" its very messy i think JJ cauld make it a lot better ,

take a screenshot and illustrate what you mean. i dont find it messy at all, i could (and do) operate in it blindly. but if you pull up a screenshot in paint or photoshop and point out things, we may be on to something.

co-sign. I'll see if I can muck up something in photo. now I barely use grid edit but it is definitely an improvement over step-edit. JJ deserves so much credit for this.

However, I personally was never keen on the switch from the 16 pad screen to the smaller viewable range - I automatically switch back to 16 pad view everytime I'm in grid edit. I actually prefered the way grid edit worked in the earliest of versions.

Of course the biggest criticism I have is with the lack of intuition, I feel is, apparent in the design - i.e., the use of shift and tap tempo. The most important commands such as "copy paste cut delete" should always be visible. And, you should never have to switch on record to use any of these essential commands - I don't use grid edit unless I'm editing the tracks?!

I'll photoshop something tomorrow.

True, true, grid edit UI could use some streamlining and be made more consistent...

I think it should'nt be a problem for JJ, since it's all about the UI, not the code behind it...

the main points are already noted, but maybe we can put more details in our requirements

I propose a plan ;) :
1. Pribeh-tom make picture
2. we discuss picture and make detail
3. we translate wish to JJ speak ;)
4. Antonym send wish to JJ
5. JJ make grid edit nice

or we can all submit the wishes over JJ's bug report page if Antonym feels that would get more response...

we've tried that before - OVERDUB must be on before any changes can be made. that's why you must hit overdub first.

i'm not trying to stop good suggestions, but is hitting overdub that hard? i'm kind of hard pressed to find a way to make 16 pad grid edit better, but like i said if i can get some clear image suggestions or demonstrations of "clutter" i may be more inclined to agree and clamor for changes...

Co-sign. There is nothing like getting Antonym to see your point of view. Getting him on your side will certainly get your feature request added to your MPC. You may even get the feature named after you.

i've got ideas that would be nice for me :
first :
-select multiple events
-edit multiple events (no need for screen example it's just a little improvment that when you select many items and modify one items it modifys many items...)

second:
-ability to see the time grid in midi grid editing...

i agree grid edit could be made a bit nicer (especially since it still contains minor bug).

but then, people should first use it for a while, before making suggestions.

i am not trying to be a smart ass or patronizing, but everytime i use a new feature, i feel, oh, this would be better there, this could be changed etc... and within a week or two of using it, i realize that in fact i do not need these requests, or that they would be unfeasible, or not really usefull at all.

for example, about press overdub, it is the way mpc works (same in step edit, or realtime record). and it does not take long to get 100% used of it.

one sure thing is that JJ cannot make us know how to use new features before we actually make the small effort to learn them :)

that being said, i would be very pleased to see people posting interesting and well detailed features ideas for grid edit.

cheers :)

here is my grid edit bug that i've noticed since 3.0X and just learned to live with

1 - load project with a detailed track in 1 seq
2 - from the start of the track, highlight using the TAP TEMPO and SCROLL RIGHT to the END of the track
3 - realize that you didn't want to go ALL THE WAY to the END and SCROLL BACK TO THE LEFT
4 - NOTE: the selected area doesn't appear to change for the first couple turns
5 - BUG: displayed selected area does not correspond with ACTUAL selected area (detectable by copying/pasting)

this would best be demonstrated in visual form but does anyone else know what i'm talking about here?

this is, after spending the last 11 months in the evolving jj grid edit, the only problem with the current grid edit i see.

There is an additional bug/feature I've noticed, when I edit midi control data.
I'm not entirely sure if I dislike it or like it. Sometimes it is usefull, sometimes a pain!

If I record midi CC changes, say mod wheel, then decide I want to change it, I highlight the whole lot, overdub, insert. Use the Q links to "draw" the new shape" (which is an ACE feature) and it doesn't alter the CC level if it is above the line drawn.

i.e if I draw a flat line, the previously recorded midi CC data is overwritten if it was below the line level and remains if it is above the line.

The way to cure it is delete the data first, then insert.

I guess it is a bug, but sometimes its cool to be able to increase the "floor" value without removing any peaks.

The midi grid edit features really are excellent. Personally I don't see any problem with the layout or anything. Compared to grid edit in akai os, i.e. none, this is superb :)
A casual reader may get the impression some of you guys are a bit too critical of JJOS!
