I've paid for os1 and now os 2, and to be honest I'm underwhelmed.
the new features that have been added to the mpc are useful that is for sure, but I feel like the priorities have been falling short, with the MPCs primary duties being sampling, chopping, sequencing, muting, and song creation I'm very much sick of the 'work around' attitude that has taken the lead on this machine, you know in hiphop there is a term we use often
called 'going back to the basics' and I feel that the basics have not been made to work properly and that instead of that we've got alot of cool extra stuff. we're obviously blessed to have jj programming whatever ideas we can come up with and that's great but can we please in both os's have the mute functions fixed, have the song mode fixed, have the ability to loop a sample on a pad without it being cumbersome, and could we have some new features that bulk up the basic features. thats all i'm really talking about here in some cases the basics need to be fixed and in others it would be nice if they were added to, I hear alot of people telling other people that the mpc is not an all in one machine and don't try to make it one, use your computer ect.... and the same people are calling for tons of cool but esoteric features before their time. I'll be honest if the basics aren't working right I could give a flying **** about those extra super cool features, at this rate my mpc 1000 will be able to make me a **** latte before it can record mute functions in song mode like it's suppose to.

and I'm so sick of work arounds I'm about to change the name of this **** to the 'work around 1000'........... like pete rock said, what about the basics.

mute functions
looping
direct recording

also I know i'm lucky, I know Akai didn't do the job right and i'm thankful for jj, that's why I paid my chips now gimme the **** dip.

you know, i've felt that way too at times but I know we have someone who actually listens and makes quite frequent updates. Akai on the other hand has made so-so updates to their os and seems like they could giving a flying f*** about us beyond the purchase of their potentially amazing sampler with a preinstalled subpar and seemingly 10 year-old operating system.

i'm content with the $70 i spent and the jj grab bag of updates. He's gotta stay interested too beyond the monetary compensation.

yep jj is a godsend, i just wish he would reverse his stratagies sometimes, I wish everything in os 1 worked before i got os 2 and those basic but primary things still didn't work.

they may not work exactly the way YOU want them to, but they most certainly work
not to mention what you find to be "Extra" features are STEP ONE, FOUNDATION features for a great deal many others.

i have a feeling we'll get there for some things like basic midi cc and others we'll just have to learn how to do as they are like looping a sample by holding a pad + hitting track mute

the features are there, just gotta know the trick for each of them

with the MPCs primary duties being sampling, chopping, sequencing, muting, and song creation

sampling: ADSR, alternate looping, qreal per TRACK not programming.
chopping: jj chopshop is one of the best conceived chopping methods i've experienced in any software
sequencing: you have a total of 6 sequencing modes to choose from, as well as graphical midi cc and qreal sequencing/editing. jjos as a midi editor is more intuitive, expressive and powerful than any daw midi editor i've used.
muting: IMO, muting is moot when you can simply NOT program in the note.
song creation: where is the issue? song mode has caused my zero problems

very few of the features we've been given fall outside of your list there Monk

I do understand what you are saying Nym but that's from your vantage point, and I hope you get why i'm using the word vantage, most of us are not viewing things from your vantage point and and some don't want to.

I'll give you an example, you do alot of grid work and it might even be said that you're the #1 supporter of the feature and I know you're not the only one, there are many others but there are also many others that doen't even use the mpc in the way that you do, personaly i've been grateful for your insight and help on several occasions but I don't think the attitude that everyone just needs to get to your level is the answer. some people use the mpc differently just like you said in your response to me about (my way) of using it, same goes for you, if there is a problem why jj can't cater to the way we all use it then I don't know why. and on that note

it reminds me of something else, the live mpc users aren't really being catrered to and they spent the $70. bucks on the os just like you and I did what about them????this doesn't mean that i think you're wrong about anything you're saying. all i'm saying is first things first is the way that I wish it was.
if we were talking about daw software we wouldn't even be having this discussion because everyone would prefer fixes instead of work arounds.
just because the mpc is not a pc doesn't change anything, it's still software and we still paid for it, reaper would not be getting new features when old ones haven't been fixed and I think you know that.

look at it this way, there's a section of the mpc users who don't know as much as you and even if they did still would prefer os 1 with everthing fixed and a few tweaks compared to os 2 and I think there is nothing invalid about that. I don't happen to be one of them, I need that new mixer we've got, and the new non destructive sampling as well as a couple other things that are only in os2

but I also need the basics fixed and tweaked, a little tweak and audio tracks would go from a feature not used to used constantly for alot of us, and I know you think muting is moot, but alot of us don't, alot of us want to mute on the fly and not have to plan out all the mutes before hand , it has alot to do with workflow. your worlflow is well known around here but there are other workflows to be had, alot of people would rather have the pad/trigger feature back instead of some of the other less basic neccessity features and some features like alternate sequences and such really need to be tweaked because they are much less useful in practice than what everyone thought they would be like when we got them.

again i'll say what about the live mpc users, look at it from an evolutioanary viewpoint, everyone actively making music right now knows that the live mpc users/ live pa users are the growing market right now, that's why roger linn is about to come out with the instruments he just made full of features for live users, I know the mpc is not the boomchick but still jj shouldn't just leave the live users in the dust if he's currently building an OS's for music in this day and age. and that's even if me and you don't use it that way.

OS2 is still in its early stage of development i guess. As for direct recording JJ will certainly do something later. For a classical mpc use, just non-destructive chop is worth the money.

edit: thanks, that's a lot easier for me

but in passing, if you don't think there are adequate live opportunities in jjos2 OR jjos1, you have certainly not explored all the options. there are MILLIONS of different ways to run live shows off these os's, so so many. often this is where additional sequencers and programming tools come into play.

there's certainly more live options available today than ever before, granted time will tell whether the 5000 will break that trend as a live performance tool

I totally agree about how great the direction of the os is going, i'm just not in agreement about the current condition of the features that we already have but I could be wrong about that it's only my perception that I can speak for, there are seemingly far too many work arounds, me myself I don't mind a work around for a feature that doesn't exist but work arounds for features that already exist are hendrenses in my book.

what are your 4 biggest gripes? please provide detailed overviews, even for the mute bug which has been discussed previously.

you're being a bit vague presently Mpc_monk, do you mind telling us exactly what it is you don't like about the current setup on the machine?

What features are missing, what workarounds are annoying you?

I use my MPC 100% for live stuff, and i don't have any issue with it. I'm no fan-boi either, i know it has it's limitations, but so does everything.

I can understand where you are coming from monk. That's why I am sticking with JJ OS1. To me it epitomizes exactly what the 1K should have been if Akai had done the OS right. As for ADSRs, arpeggiators, non-destructive choppers, and the like, yeah I use them, but I have other devices that do them faster and better for me. Note I said 'for me', as in what works for me. I'm a basics kinda guy too. So to each his own.

It hit me in the head about 3 years ago, after I had amassed all this hardware and software, and I felt like the quality (and pace) of my production had taken a dip from my setup back in 2000, which was a JV-1000 and an ASR-X. Or even my setup in 2002 which was a mac with Logic 5 and EXS24, and a MOTIF.
