MPC5000 reviews, bug reports and fellow user support on the most recent standalone, hardware MPC from Akai

I would love to get that mpc 5000...what i like about it .it's the power of the synthesis...you can really give a new stamp to your drumkits...while the MV is more "shy" on this subject...

I love my MV i think MV set a new standart when it comes to worklow...i call my MV....: BAM...because every function is just one button away...and BAM...lol...

I'm really scared about spending 900$1200$ in the MPC 5000...with all the bug reported on every forum (US,EUR)...

It's really a pity...but come on it is visible as soon as you put your eyes on it that there's something wrong with that sampler...

It looks cheap...even an MPC 1000 gives a better first impression...

As far as bugs are concerned with the MPC 5000...is it a problem of RAM? 128...196 mb?? really enough for all that engine? i think not...

Generations comes generation change!! Akai tried to keep the philosophy that made the success...forgetting one thing...time and technology change!!!

The OS of any MPC is purely and simply...OUTDATED! DOnt look for any other reason.

Kwandu

Ps: I have my MV 8800 since january 2007...never had a single problem with it. Believe me... NOT a SINGLE problem.

I recently bought the MPC 1000...to have that legend with me...but when it comes to worklow i switch directly to the MV...I like to live with my time...

The MPC has that 90's feeling of use...ok that was the bomb back in the days...but if akai continue with betting on nostalgic people they will surely fail their next try...

AKAI or not...No one is willing to pay 1500$ for a "trouble sampler".

Please show me the fora. The same few bugs mentioned on several fora is not a drama.....

alright cool...i bought that legendary mpc some weeks ago so i dont try to go down to much on it...because her groove is really tight.

But to repeat myself i just say the OS is an OS from another time (the 90's).

peace

You cant't have any regrets if you didn't buy it.. this thread is about MPC 5000 owners not about MV owners.

I don't have a single regret with my 5k. It is amazing. And no, I don't think it's OS is from the 90's, I think it was programmed sometime around 2007 and updated sometime around 2009

Please let's have an up to date OS! The modern features we are missing:-

Pop ups which say you have won, just click here
Frequent updates and somehow the MPC is slower than when you first got it
A blue screen at unexpected moments telling you to power the MPC off
A mouse so you can take your hands off the groove and break the workflow
No buttons, sliders and knobs but an alpha numeric keyboard to type them instead
Several different software suppliers, all of whom promise you it works...

The OS is so far advanced from the Roland and Yamaha midi sequencers created at the same time. I fought with a Roland MC-50 until I realized it had no interest in making music. The difference is Akai kept its workflow, adding to it as the hardware capabilities grew. Its from the '90s, doesn't mean it is irrelevant now.

Well, I took the plunge. Found a used MPC 5000. I'm waiting for FEDEX to deliver it. I'll keep you all posted. I've never used/owned an MPC, so this is all new to me. I've owned several pieces of gear in the past and I'm looking forward to diving into this beast!

Cheers.

Well, this beast of a machine came in yesterday. I have to say, it's pretty amazing. I only had a chance to turn it on and go through some of the sounds. They layout, menus, etc all make sense and well designed. I was a little surprised by the hard disc noise.. it's not loud but I can definitely hear the disc spinning... not an issue though.

the cpu ic simply overloaded!!
you see it on its hickup way of following slider operations (trim mode, mixer fader..).
the os HAS TO BE COMPLETED!!
everything else is a crime against the customer!!

another thing is that an easy sequence (just 4-5 drum sounds playing), when speeding up the bpm to 250-300...wow, the processor cant manage that!! the screen get stuck, everything slows down..
really: a rm1x or rs7000 is much safer!!

i own ist since 1 day + wouldn yuse it live!

The display updating is separate from the core timing and sample processing. The timing is pretty good, its the screen updates and button responses which are slow. A poor compromise at best, when the 2500 and 1000's have much tighter screen response and they feel more solid. This is also not helped by the slow MPC5000 LCD display, I can't believe with the LCD technology today we still have a temperature sensitive and slow screen - in cold weather you can see the letters morph from one to another instead of a near instant change.

But the core of the MPC is good. I think the design is to give the engine the most importance and the interface gets time whenever the cpu is free. This makes sense of course. My only real gripe is that sometimes I am sure I pressed Play Start correctly but it doesn't play. Not often, but often enough to make me wonder...

me the same with the play button... i thought its a mechanical (contact) problem.

i want to use this unit, it has potential, better flow then the rs7000 or mv for me!

also the listening to a sample in "load from disc mode", altering the bpm makes it freeze..

my display doesnt look homogen, right side gets purple (new unit).

thats it after a few hours testing..

Yes, the screen is purple on the bottom right side if the contrast is adjusted to its best. I use the contrast knob every day because the display is so temperature sensitive, so I hope the pot lasts. I would REALLY like to be able to invert the colors (so the background is white just as the manual shows). The blue to purple color wouldn't be so noticeable with a white background.

So close and yet so far from perfect, as all the MPC's are...

no, i am discovering many "bugs" minute for minute.
i sent some to the list, but as i saw there: they soften the needs of the user, calling it "workarrounds". of course: a faulty unit cant sell their sound cds/dvds..

no, i will change to the 1000, a unit which (thanks jj) works!!
if i can smell akai after this experience for longer..
