... you have and know what a midi controller is, have an mpc , abelton daw. Right? .. you either stole someone's gear or you just dropped a few racks and jumped right in the game to be asking how to hookup the controller to your daw via pc or MAC as the host for the daw. I won't even start on you having an mpc. You need to read the manuals first off. Second spend months reading guides watching vids. Third, buy your stuff. When you buy stuff that's not stolen , it comes with this thing called a manual. Follow me for a sec.. also, forums, manuals and support for OWNERS of products. Abelton, forums, support link in the daw for REGISTERED owners. You Polly have an m-audio , axiom 25 at best.. surely they have a site and support for, yes, registered owners. You didn't even mention the interface!!. Come correct man, most of us live, eat, sleep and alienate our family's for this. If I'm wrong I'm sorry, but you basicly just asked us how to set up your whole lab.

Without giving the whole scheme away...

1. You connect your midi keyboard to a midi input on your MPC.

2. You connect a midi cable from your MPC midi out to your computer's midi interface.

3. You then set Ableton (or other DAW) to receive midi from your MPC via your computer's midi interface.

4. On your MPC track set the midi destination to midi out port used in step two.

5. All midi from your keyboard is now routed THRU your MPC track so you may record into the MPC sequencer or Ableton.

Using this method, your MPC must be switched on if you wish to enter midi to the Ableton sequencer. But if your midi keyboard has a USB connection you can use this to enter notes in Ableton when your MPC is still turned off.

Give it a try and let us know how you get on.

Reading the manuals is obviously a good start, but as I've given it to you on a plate try to understand how it [midi] works and how it can pass THRU other devices.

I can hear him thinking; What the F is MIDI?

This was a legit question afterall I guess. I always use port B. Port A doesn't seem to record the notes. I don't know if I've read it somewhere or it's common.

Anyways my apologies to you for being a douchebag!

Hey Guys,

I was reading the above and I have a similar issue and I wonder whether you can give me some insight. First and foremost I did buy a brand new MPC-5000 and I also read the manul which I must say doesn't exactly get into a lot of details when it comes to midi :) now seriously,

Tthis is my setup :-

I am running Cakewalk from a PC as a sequencer and I have a Unitor8x8 midi interface connected to it via USB

I have various gear connected with the Unitor, 2xS3000's, Novation Supernova, Access Virus, Boss DR-880, KorgX3 (which I use as a midi keyboard and sound module)

I have connected the MPC-5000 on a seperate Midi In & Out port on the Unitor8 pretty much like the rest of the gear (therefore I didn't connect the midi keyboard directly with the MPC as stated above by clint246clint as yet, something I still need to try out)

What happens, issues :-

1. I do manage to trigger the MPC sounds off Cakewalk so that confirms that the MIDI 'settings' (cause there isn't much settings on the MPC) are fine. However, after 5-10 minutes (without changing any settings of course) the sounds stop getting triggered. I can still see the MIDI activity box flashing on the MPC however the sounds are not actually triggered (I don't hear any audio).

2. Sounds can get triggered off Cakewalk (For a short while) however sounds NEVER get triggered from the MIDI Keyboard.

3. After a certain while the MPC gives a 'Midi Frame Error' and the machine literally jams completely, I would need to switch off and back on again

Solutions :-

I would presume that all these issues are happening because the MPC has a Midi Interface of it's own with 2-ins and 4xouts and what clint246clint wrote addresses this issue. However IF I am only addressing 1in and 1out and the MIDI settings on the MPC address those settings why the hell doesn't the MPC simply work like all the other gear?
I find it rather upsetting that a sampler that is more than decade old (S3000) works better when it comes to MIDI than it's much more modern counterpart the MPC-5000!

In the mean time Keep beating the beats! Peace you all!
