I recently had some issues with volume control with my MPC 5000 and my Moog Slim Phatty. The issue was that the volume would boost to max on the SP after sequences SP parts on MPC. None of my other synths reacted this way and I believe it was hit or miss at one point so I was stumped. i swapped cables. I toyed with settings on my interface, synths and mpc and eventually I figured since it only happens with the Slim that it must be the slim. So I sent back for repair and they (moog) found nothing wrong and hadnt encountered such a problem before so they upgraded the firmware to a yet unreleased version for the Slim. No change.

Then I contacted Akai and a cat named Sean responded with the remedy. Simple fix. not really a problem so much as it was an issue with me not realizing this setting needs to be changed (because it was never an issue before). None the less i feel like a goof for this whole mess. Anyways I thought maybe someone with similar issue may benefit from this so that's why im posting.

Sean Wrote...
"The Mixer of the MPC5000 is controlling volume levels of external MIDI devices. Navigate to Mode > Mixer (Pad 7). The levels you alter here will transmit to your external device." ~ Sean (Numark / Akai)

Done and done it works perfectly (although this is not a factor with my other synths it does affect SP so maybe others can benefit from my troubles).

Thanks Perry (Moog) & Sean (Akai Numark)

Love the slim phatty man. I didnt realize it but I have been chasing that Moog sound for years. I knew what sound i wanted but I didnt know it was the "Moog Sound". From all sorts of soft synth to the DSI mopho i could not get it (although the mopho is ill in it's own way) but once I got the Slim I finally realized thats where it was at. Now I can spot the moog sound out of a crowd. The filter is mad nice. Sound is rich and thick when you want it to be and / or big and screaming when you want it to be. Easy to create sounds on too. Not a huge footprint but big enuff to put your hands on (more than I can say for my mopho desktop - too small to create sounds on without controller or sw) anyways... I really like it with the 5k. I usually run it into the input thru and use the 5k as an effects processor for it and it works out pretty well for me. Then i sample the moog parts into the 5k and chop em, replay and make new sequences, stack new parts etc. Dope piece man.

I'll probably buy one after my wife and I buy a house. I can't buy any gear untill then... ( my choice, not whipped like that.) I still need to buy a midi keyboard and studio desk. I haven't even hooked up monitors yet :( I got my mpc at work on my desk with a cheap turntable, a stack of records and some headphones LOL.

Man you just spoke a page out of my life within the last 6 months or so. We were on track to buy a house and we moved in the day before thanksgiving 2010. I copped the Slim in Jan. or Feb... I couldnt see buying another piece of gear before getting right with our plan for a house. I'd say your in the right frame of mind. and if I know women, you wouldnt get an ounce of peace if you did it the other way around.

Looks like the new OS v3.1 for the slim phatty addresses this issue with midi cc output filtering where you can send all cc messages except volume message allowing you to keep control of the volume in your rig.
