ive mutlitracked and tracked using single track method. (not this method by Daz though)

both using MTC

over multiple passes you don't get drift, unless your midi interface is poo.

i use a roland Um-One and no hiccups - yet to try the above method though

That would indicate that it has sample accurate sync via MTC, which I do not believe is possible.

Have you actually zoomed in to sample level and checked/measured it?

for a multitracked session, yes. dots all lined up :)

and um

you dont know Reaper?

You just have to make sure the MTC rate inside the MPC is the same as what is set in Reaper.

I have to disagree, I don't believe you have zoomed right in to where you can see individual samples, and measured any difference between separate takes/tracks.

From my understanding, it simply can not be sample accurate.

Really nothing to do with Reaper specifically, which I have not used, but I understand how MIDI sync is setup.

Get an MPC, get Reaper, and try it out then, then after your test come back and apologize for your statements haha

and hook me up with some akai stuff bruh

Don't believe Reaper will make any difference, but when I get around to testing it in Pro Tools, will give Reaper a go as well.

Spent a fair amount of time about 15 years ago sorting sync issues with a Pro Tools system, a couple of Tascam multitrack digital tape decks, and a Sony Betacam SP deck, using a MOTU Digital Time Piece.

Was reading the MOTU technical white papers at the time, and it explained that the MTC spec can only sync up randomly within 1/4 frame of actual sync. So each time you synced a pair of devices up, it would lockup somewhere randomly within that 1/4 frame.

Will test it out when I get some time, and am happy to admit I am wrong and that sample accurate sync really is possible with MTC, if it turns out that it is.

It wont be Sample Accurate because The mpc is midi hardware.. Their will be drifting...
hard ware midi has a physical limitation.. Only Software(in Theory) can be Sample Accurate..(midi vsts rendering as audio. Not midi sending out to hardware) I remeber having a disscusion on here to do with the 5000 ... ie.. when you hit a pad with multiple layers/ samples, they dont all trigger on the same time.. You get a flam sound... This is becuase midi can't physically trigger things at the same time.. It's impossible.. Even though there is polyphony, they dont trigger at the exact same time.. So clocking would induce more latency/drifting becuase it's sending more infomation through midi...

In saying this , it tracked out without any audible errors(nothing crazily drastic Stuff happining under 64ths of a beat maybe... Because i put in a blank sequence at the end and start....

Anyone tried it yet?

I cant now because my mpc1k is in hobart!!!!!!! Fuk!!! The venue locked me out in the morning!!!!! And i had to fly back to perth by 10am. Venue only opened back up at 4pm....

Yes, am wondering how much the drift ends up actually being. Will give it a test when I get a chance.

Much more accurate to use a visible sync click/pulse/etc. in the audio on all tracks, before or after the music, and then to line them up visually after tracking.

Would be interested to see if the slop measures something like the 1/4 frame I read about. At 44.1kHz, with a 30 fps framerate, it might equate to 367.5 samples of random sync slop on each pass.

Yes, we were also discussing this in regards to the MPC3000.

It will probably apply to all hardware MPCs.

I think that not being able to lock up with sample accurate sync is more to do with the protocol, rather than having more MIDI data on the cable.

I just thought of another way to track individually without clock syncing...

Can someone try it...

You need a mpc with jjos that can assign mpc buttons to midi notes...
And Audio midi interface...

Assign a midi note to 'playstart' and a midi note to 'next track'

set the tempo the same as mpc sequence to track out..

make sure mpc is solo on the first track..
MAke sure sequence is not looping or loop is off

Loop reaper (make sure the cycle is on) so that you have atleast one bar infront and 4 bars extra at the end of reaper more than you mpc sequence..)

Create a midi track that sends midi to the mpc...
One bar into the reaper track make a midi note that corrosponds to playstart
At the last bar of the loop in reaper create a midi note that corrosponds to "next track"

Would like to see how that pans out....

IF you want you can make a midi note in the mpc to send to reaper on that last track of your sequence to "stop" reaper....

nah havnt had a chance, daz thats **** to hear about the mpc, hope the gig in hobart was good though! !

i track by slaving reaper to the mpc and starting recording via mmc (mpc play button) ........i get no drift - have set clicks in there before, no drift.

ill try this (above) out Daz when i get a mo, but your reaper skills are beyond me, and midi tracks in reaper drives me bananas haha

@tom You will definatley get driftng.. It's just not percievabley(a word or i cant spell) audible...

I have a frineds mpc2500 i forgot about !! haha

So i tried my second method and it works really good!!!
I haven't done a stereo pass of the whole mix to see what type of drifting occurs.. That s when you can hear it.. and see it..

When you have two sequences which are the same.. One is track out individually and one is ..

Yeah once you find out how powerful jjos and reaper are together, it kind of blows you mind a bit...

Sorry for the topic hijack...

thought the exact thing later. but if there are no audible difference i think we can say it doesn't create problems :)

mail me that template :) haha and give ya mate his mpc back lol
