BTW, regarding support for older MPCs, are we finally going to get an MPC that not only reads old MPC format, but also exports in old MPC format (i.e. 3000/2000/60/akp etc)? I would imagine this shouldn't be too hard to implement now we are moving the OS to PC/Mac environments?

In theory there's so much stuff that can be incrementally implemented now as there's little or no limits compared to trying to cram everything into the small amount of system memory in MPC hardware. What would be cool would be a plug in system with API for third parties to develop new add ons.

This also means, assuming they've nailed the hardware, that there's no need to buy another 'MPC' - just software updates, so cheaper for all users.

Just to reiterate, I am actually very excited about this new MPC, it could be really great, hopefully Akai up their game to cope with ongoing support and development.

@mpctutor

commercially specking i agree 100%, in the same optical it's a good move to call that mpc too

the bug issue is dramatic, NI programmed the best music production software out there... and everybody knows about akai OS.

the 5k didn't sell, i really hope this thing is gonna work! the software pic i saw isn't that reassuring... it feels that cheap

strong point is the internal audio interface here, dealbreaker if you start making beat

AKAI statement from Facebook:
"This is a deeply integrated controller for our new VMPC software."

What a crock of shit, it's just an MPD with a whole bunch of other crummy shit duck taped to it.

they need to post some more videos up of this, i'm really interested in how the software will work and if they will elaborate on song mode in more of a DAW type style.

i really hope the slim line version doesnt cripple any features, its just a smaller controller, ala maschine. although i think they made the maschine mikro a little too limiting controller wise.

i also hope the chopping is good on it cause of no jjos, but for me, chopping with a mouse is more comfortable anyway so im hopeful that that part will be solid.

i really wana go to NAMM and check this thing out in person, when do you guy suppose it will become available?

about the bug fixes you guys are talking about, i actually think akai will be more on top of it than they were with the 5k simply because its seeming to look like a direct maschine competitor, and from a business standpoint thats one of the hottest production pieces out right now; i think akai knows this, so they naturally will want customers to keep buying it and staying happy with it.

i think when the released the mpc 5k, they knew it was to a niche market, but wanted to test the waters and see how a new "flagship" would be, with the huge price tag and it being hardware i can see why they didnt make very many sales, an thus didnt have much motivation to fix the bugs ect.

which kinda sucks, but honestly, why are they gonna care too much about a product if it doesnt sell?

i think with this, they have the chance to sell it like hotcakes to new users and older heads alike that have been waiting for something similar.

anyway, im hopeful that its going to turn out dope.

ill probably wait for a few months till some tutorial videos/ reviews come out and the bugs have been found, and i'll probably end up copping one, im excited for the slimline version too, i just hope it has all the functionality of the normal one.

i can agree, kinda stupid name though

@ tutor, what happened to the mpd sub-forum? 8)

Why are people comparing this new release to a 5000? It's nothing like it! This is a controller, and that's all it is. Another piece of shitty plastic. Save your money, get an MPD if you must get a pad controller.

This piece of plastic isn't going to be remotely close to a real MPC's workflow.

This is perfect for akai: they can finally pass the buck (bugs) to Microsoft, Apple, your Taiwanese motherboard maker etc. They'll never have to take responsibility for their wack software ever again. Not that they were ever good at that.

The good news for any poor sap who buys this is that JJ can probably bring back the PC version of JJOS updated for use with this controller. Only cost you another hundred bones or so... and once again, Akai gets a pass.

I must add that JJOS wouldn't be ported to this new "MPC".

JJOS was made by modifying original OS source code which is stored in the hardware. This new machine would be software based.

Realistically you'd have to create a piece of software that can communicate with this MPC for PC and mac. And then create a totally new OS for the MPC by reverse engineering the code as it would be much different.

It's on a totally different level.

But, I have logic for this ...

... I don't even use the editor for the Machine. Which is an important question to ask yourself before purchasing this MPC. Do you want another DAW just make beats with this MPC and a separate DAW for your other music?

If it's just a pad controller you want why pay the additional $$$ for bells ans whistles?
