I'm new to the whole "hybdrid MPC" thing, having bought an MPC studio a couple weeks ago, and I love it so far, even though I still feel awkward tethered to a computer. I bought my 2000XL in 2001, and used it for over a decade, and even toured with it, opening for bands like Of Montreal with my band. But finally I had to part with it for many reasons.
I'm still learning the basics of the MPC Studio, which is a whole new world to me, but I like it a lot. I like being able to sequence Vienna Instruments soft synths, to make like groove classical music, and I'm eager to use it to sequence hardware synths too.
I like having one instrument on each output of my audio interface. I am using a MOTU audio express right now, and with the four outputs + the SPDIF stereo, I have six channels of out right now for instruments or drums. Next year I'm going to upgrade to a different MOTU I'm looking at that has ten analog outputs.
But I'm running into the limits of my PC. I have a Y510 Lenovo, with 8 gigs of Ram. I'm thinking of A) upgrading the ram to 16 gigs, or B) upgrading to a new workstation laptop, with possibly 24 gigs of Ram, upgradeable to 32, and with a firewire port so I can use a firewire interface, and possibly with a SSD drive for samples for Vienna Instruments, etc.
What kind of computers are you guys using? Macs? PC's? Sometimes when Studio gags, and the CPU level goes up, I wonder if it's the ram, or the processor, or maybe even bugs. I've found it's best to avoid MPC Studio effects for the most part, and use outside ones. Also, certain vsts's don't work so well. Keep in mind, I am using Studio as standalone, not in a DAW, and I record onto a Yamaha AW4416 16 track.
Anyway, sorry for the novel here, but this is what I've experienced so far with the Studio, and just wondering what take on it you guys have.
