Roger just said that the MPC60 was a project that never saw day from his then bankrupt company, so it was a success when Akai risked and funded it. He introduced something new to Akai and they bit into it fast.

His company went broke because of bad business decisions, not because the product was a failure.. if you knew your history you'd be aware the LM-1,LinnDrum & Linn 9000 were quite a revolution being the first digital drum machines on the market and were very popular with pros at the time and were essential elements to Prince, Michael Jackson and numerous other records throughout the 80's. Akai was well aware of this and that is the reason they hired him to port his creations under the Akai moniker. At least Akai Japan had for a brief moment the initative to inlist such a creative genius, nowadays they reach out to..forum members such as yourself (no disrespect but you're no roger linn) as they seem more interested in hyping then innovating.. also you say there are only 3 Linn MPC's but you do realize that those are the 3 first MPC's that laid down the groundwork for all MPC's to follow right? without those 3 i guarantee you Akai would have gone broke. Those 3 are also still considered amongst the best despite their obvious technical limitations due to being +20 years old.. that alone proves to me how forward thinking and ahead of his time Roger Linn was, unfortunately it is doubtful you will grasp/acknowledge any of this..

...and then AKAI went bankrupt and had to get bought out by NUMARK [or should i say venture capitalist Jack O'Donnell] in 2004.

what's your point?? why is it so hard for you to give the man the credit he deserves??

it's like you're saying a man can invent a car from scratch, but that the same man could never come up with the idea for designing a jeep...

There sure is, spammers, trolls and general negativity mongers as well.

I'm not having it - too many newbies getting pounced on by a group of members who seem to spend 80% of their time 'patrolling' the Ren forum with a very clear aim of disrupting what was once a rather positive community and then whining like babies when their posts get deleted.

This has become a negative hang out where newbies are made to feel dumb and little cliques get together to try to force their agenda at the expense of the overall friendly nature of the site, while all the time insisting they are trying to somehow 'purge' the site for everyone's benefit. It's pathetic. This place used to be friendly and positive, now it's a constant battle to keep it in shape.

There's approximately 10 people here who quite frankly need to shape up or **** off.

I don't know Tutor, thats always been the vibe here and goes back to the legacy MPCs with RTFM. You remember those? These are not newbies posting, they are long time members with low post counts and only come around when Akai got something new coming... like Dan, where he been to solve some problems. There viral marketing going on.

crossings wrote:the spammers are easy to tell apart from the "newbies"... i'm sorry but people don't just join a forum to praise AKAI and defend the ren with their first post... it's become blatantly obvious.

If its so obvious, why do you feel the need to disrupt the forum by pointing it out? Can't people make up their own minds? Is your opinion so important that you feel it's worth picking on a newbie who many people will simply see as being excited and positive about his recent purchase?

When it comes to judging who is a spammer, only I decide, it's my site and I have access to information you don't have. Leave it to me to deal with it.

I wonder why there are so many '1 post wonders'? Maybe it's because they post once and are made to feel to unwanted they disappear for good.

Trust me, the Ren forum doesn't need some vigilante group patrolling it trying to bring down the positive vibe many of the Ren users have.

That fact is, there's people there who are happy with the Ren and want to post about it. There's also people who aren't happy, and their posts stay as well.

Then theres the people who don't have a Ren, don't intend on getting one, and just want to be negative for negativity's sake, like it's some kind of badge of honour.

the rest of us are just like ants that see some candy left out... we can't help it... it's only natural we devour it. you can't blame the ants... just don't leave candy laying around if you don't want any ants.

By 'rest of us' you mean you and a few others compared to the other 45,000 members? You don't speak for everyone. Being vocal does not make your opinion the opinion of the entire board. It's an opinion shared by a few people, who ironically are often acting far worse than the people they are trying to force out of the forum. If you want to sound off, there's the off topic forum. I don't have a problem with you mouthing off there. But I don't want to see any of the other sub forums filled with newbie bashing, hating, pointless negativity or trolling. It has never been like that, and it shouldn't be now.

But if some people can't help their addiction, I can just remove their access to the Ren forum. That sounds like a decent way to deal with it. Thoughts?

Dan is most likely working on the updates to the Ren rather than hanging out on a forum where he frequently gets it in the neck for this that or the other. Obviously some Akai employees seem to come here purely for marketing purposes, Andy Mac for example.

Either way, this doesn't give people the right to continually disrupt the Ren forum with endless trolling.

Thanks for derailing this awesome thread into rant about forum etiquette. It's always been a free for all, but people get helped. Can we go back to discussing linn now?

 at anyone not acknowleding the importance of Linn in all of this for the sake of their own ego.

He has every right to be p*ssed off at the way things were seemingly handled back then. A typical story of someone getting shafted by a profit-mongering business who has no real desire to improve anything but their bank balance.

At least Linn hasn't lost his passion for developing products. The Tempest is genuinely unique, not for everybody, but it certainly fills a niche in the market.

+1

Back to the topic, I wonder if Roger will ever allow a biography to be published and clear up a few myths?

I've read a load of interviews and they all cover the same ground pretty much if we're talking 1977-1997, which for me is the most interesting period of his story.

just a thought... Isnt it interesting that while we debate, fall in/out love with, cry, kick and scream all about the MPC (what ever flavor) Roger himself thinks its a totally antiquated way to create music now a days? Meanwhile, the tempest and linn drum 2 dont sample and thats what we are all about.

to me the MPC is hip hops rock guitar equivalent. aint no body trying to change the rock guitar much. a lot of chair rearranging there too.

It's mad foul that homie stopped cats checks and gansgtered his sh!t just to still sell it to this day. all of the magic happened at a moment in time. it was like lightening in a bottle. still has us all buggin. like golden age hiphop. we will never get there again. thank god we got there at some point though. If my 5000 goes belly up. I will get it repaired and keep banging em out. not to say I never had a an older MPC. I did. not to say I wont cop a newer one. I will. just saying no matter your stance. you gotta love the myth and the legend and the lineage of the MPC and the man, the people behind it. just saying the whole deal is pretty incredible be it good bad and ugly. I ove the history of it all.
