mpc 60 ps2 and serial cable through edirol pcr 50 to usb ?

I got an mpc 60 but the midi cable I have is a serial and ps2 cable [these are connected i cannot separate the serial part from the ps2 part]. I can't tell from the cable w/o splitting it open if the ps2 signals go from ps2 to ps2 or might get lost in the serial part. If I have the mpc 60 going through edirol pcr 50 the mpc 60 should be set to master? I do wish to sequence from the mpc 60 via midi messages recorded in the mpc 60's sequencer. I gotta have that mpc 60 groove.

How will reason or cubase recognize the hardware? Will it see that the mpc 60 is sending midi through the edirol but not recognize an mpc 60? How about cubase sx to control vsti's?

Basically I want all my midi messages to be on the 60 and i want the 60's sequencer to be broadcasting the tune via midi . Then once I get a sequence I wish to convert all sounds to wav files and master?

OK, you might need to read up on Midi, but if you have a midi cable that ends in a serial cable, that will work, I think you aren't talking about PS2 ends but midi ends (round, five pins, fits into the 60's midi ports) basically what you have is a midi in and midi out cable, the serial goes to the computer.

I see so I have
MPC 60 MIDI out ---> MIDI in of Edirol pcr 50
Now having this will allow me to send midi from the mpc 60 sequencer through the edirol to the computer via the edirols usb midi cable.

Then I would have midi out of the Edirol pcr 50 --> to the midi in of the mpc 60? This would allow me to record the edirols midi messages and would those same recorded midi messages be re routed out from the mpc 60 back to the edirol and through the edirols usb cable so I can hear the vst's or reason from the computers speaker?

Basically using redrum to program and tweak drum samples and a drum loop w/ the original midi messages on the mpc 60 sequencer. Then having the mpc 60 sequencers midi messages from the edirol going to the 60 back into the edirol and to the computer via a different midi cable.

Is there a timing or latency issue with having all the midi messages in a loop from the edirol to the mpc and back to the edirol and to the computer?

I'm thinking I need to purchase just a ps2 midi cable if i need to recreate the edirol out to mpc 60 midi in loop. there is no serial connection there.

Which peice of hardware functions as the master the mpc 60? Do i need a world clock for this type of setup?

OK, no, the cable with the serial connection provides midi in and out to and from the computer. You need a regular midi cable to connect the mpc midi out to the edirol midi in, then you can use the usb to the computer.

There will be latency if you have a slow computer or a cheap soundcard. You should connect the MPC with a regular Midi cable to the Edirol.

And stop calling it PS2, it is technically a 5 pin Din connector, but it is affectionately known around here as a midi plug.

I am not clear as to what you are trying to do, but if you are using the MPC as the sequencer the above should set you right. If you need the MPC to receive midi from the computer, you will need to connect a midi cable from the edirol midi out (DIN connection, not USB, obviously) to the MPC midi in.

regular midi cable = 5 pin circular din and din stands for direct input network?

http://www.philrees.co.uk/midiplug.htm <-- how to make the midi plug 5 pin din cables with din plug. So it looks like from this url that 2 of the pins r for grounding 2 of the wires r for receiving transmission and sending transmission 3rd wire is for = line voltage or something can't figure out what the third is for.

How much midi cable length can I have from device to device before latency is > then 30 ms?

DIN is short for Deutsches Insitut für Normung, it's a german creation.

only 3 pins are active on a midi cable, the shell is ground.
