good point.. like proper input pres aswell To actually make it a sampler... I'd buy an iPad just to get the fly if they do that..

I actually like the idea of the fly the best out of the three hybrid ideas. if it has the same idea as the ren hardware i/o spec wise. midi in and out. stereo analog in and out. one usb. that would be pretty dope..

have you seen the new docks for the ipad?

http://www.alesis.com/dmdock

13 drum trigger inputs, some of them supporting 3 zones for ryde cymbals etc.

You can hook up a e-drum set or professional multi zone drum pad and use the ipad as drum brain. Much more powerful than the most epensive Roland e-drum brains because of worklflow. It supports Midi as well, hook up a midi keyboard and you have a nice little studio.

Or the new Behringer istudio, a more functional Alesis IO Dock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJ597dZRYYs

It has phono, you can hook up a MPD or a Korg padcontrol and a keyboard over midi, use the MPC Fly software syncing other apps with it.

I will build my studio around the ipad, seriously, get different docks and just slide the ipad in corresponding to the step of the production. Behringer for sampling and chopping with padcontrol, Alesis DM dock for some "real" drumming, and maybe Alesis AMP dock to connect a bass guitar for some real baselines.

Here some apps wich i think are useful for beatmaking besides the MPC style samplers:

Yes. I know.. I work in a music shop and got sent the info about a month back i think.. around namm time.. THis is awesome.. I was edging my boss to get these in, but he was suspect on it. The only thing that worries me with the iPad is it's response to triggering.. Especially if you like playing live instead of sequencing beats... If they can get it under 5ms latency with the extra i/o i mentioned previously(and i'd assume the fly software won't support vst/au plugs aswell which i don't care much for anyway) that'd be the closest thing to a standalone mpc sampler. plus you have a big colourful touch screen!!

The latency is because of the touch LCD screen, it's not possible to go below 5ms there because it's a LCD limitation, afaik they use high resolution IPS screens right now on the new ipad. Some PC screens can get to 2ms when overdriving the ( TN ) panel. That will get better switching to OLED screens. I'm pretty sure that the next ipad will be OLED.

But if you use MIDI devices and your stuff is interfaced and you don't run into CPU issues it shouldn't be a problem as you don't use the touchscreen for inputs most of the time. more for setting up things.

I hope that they will use the graphic power for computing in certain music programs with the new ipad, sort of GPU acceleration.

Maybe it'll just be safer to hook up a generic MPD (or MPC Studio?) via the camera kit? Not as neat, but at least it's more future proof.

Hopefully the Alesis IO Dock will be okay as that works with iPad 1 and 2 and has some give. I think it's only the thickness that's changed slightly on iPad 3.

The iPad 3 doesn't really fit the I/O dock. Audio Damage's Chris Randall Tweeted today that he got it to fit once but couldn't repeat it. I know he has the iPad 2 insert so I assume he tried with that. I'm coming from iPad 1 so I never needed the insert. Looks like Alesis have to make a new insert and mail them out to users who request one and provide serial number yet again.

On topic I feel the Fly is overpriced by about a hundred bucks, but I'll probably get one as it works with other Core MIDI capable apps. Beatmaker and NanoStudio are great with the Alesis dock and an MPC/MPD, but portable pads and another option besides the dock will be cool.

On an odd note I had a brief Facebook exchange with someone from Retronyms who are coding the Fly app. He said even with the Fly being added as an in app purchase in their Tabletop app they will not be adding Core MIDI. He said "we have something else planned." Which could only mean some BS where the Fly hardware is the only way in the future for hands on control in Tabletop. I bring this all up because I hope Akai doesn't make the standalone app only work with the Fly hardware. I assume the app like the hardware will be fully Core MIDI compliant so that you could use CCK, I/O Dock, IConnect and so forth, but companies do strange things at times.

There is quite a difference in thickness between the 1 and the 2, for sure- but screw that! Cuttin' out all possible sales from 1 owners seems goofy to me...they could've figured somethin' out. :?

I'm actaully referring to the fly software triggering samples via pad(flys midi hardware rubber pads) to sound output. Not the onscreen interaction.

Anybody with iPad 1 or 2 have a controller hooked up to a sampling app ? what is the response of hitting a pad to when the sound comes out feel like?

I tried a mini synth station when i had a iPhone.. was quite shit... THus my reservations.

I use Beatmaker2 on the iPad. When it's not on sale, it's 20 bucks. I think it's pretty awesome. I have an original iPad and the new iPad. New iPad is much more responsive but there is noticeable latency - maybe equivalent to 512 buffer in Logic (was more like 1024 on older iPad). Not great, but usable. I like the way the app is laid out so I like working with it, but this is purely for on-the-go-scenarios, which is pretty often for me.

Was that with a mpc/mpd controller though? or just using the touch screen to trigger the samples?

i really hope they make the iPad fly with i/o with midi and stereo analog in and out. That's all it what need imo. Make it a sampler... The iTunes integration is a great idea...

NEVER HAD A PROBLEM... getting an ipad 1 or ipad 3 to fit in the IO dock. NEVER
