Maybe it'll just be safer to hook up a generic MPD (or MPC Studio?) via the camera kit? Not as neat, but at least it's more future proof.
Hopefully the Alesis IO Dock will be okay as that works with iPad 1 and 2 and has some give. I think it's only the thickness that's changed slightly on iPad 3.
The iPad 3 doesn't really fit the I/O dock. Audio Damage's Chris Randall Tweeted today that he got it to fit once but couldn't repeat it. I know he has the iPad 2 insert so I assume he tried with that. I'm coming from iPad 1 so I never needed the insert. Looks like Alesis have to make a new insert and mail them out to users who request one and provide serial number yet again.
On topic I feel the Fly is overpriced by about a hundred bucks, but I'll probably get one as it works with other Core MIDI capable apps. Beatmaker and NanoStudio are great with the Alesis dock and an MPC/MPD, but portable pads and another option besides the dock will be cool.
On an odd note I had a brief Facebook exchange with someone from Retronyms who are coding the Fly app. He said even with the Fly being added as an in app purchase in their Tabletop app they will not be adding Core MIDI. He said "we have something else planned." Which could only mean some BS where the Fly hardware is the only way in the future for hands on control in Tabletop. I bring this all up because I hope Akai doesn't make the standalone app only work with the Fly hardware. I assume the app like the hardware will be fully Core MIDI compliant so that you could use CCK, I/O Dock, IConnect and so forth, but companies do strange things at times.
