How you go about your drum patterns? (congas, bongos etc.)

Hello. I've always wanted to make some drum patterns based on some congas, bongos and this type of shit, you know what I mean. I took some sounds from it and tried to play, but most of the times it doesn't work the way it's supposed to . So my question is how do you approach this kind of stuff? You chop your loops (e.g. Dr.Rex, Apple loops), you play it using one shots?

Bongos have a natural feel (swing) when played live. I suggest chopping the original hits up and playing em unquantized yourself.

with bongos id leave them unchopped and looped... i cant imagine chopping up one hits and playing them out and having it sound natural, but i could be completely wrong. but if you loop it correctly its pretty much guaranteed to sound right

I do both. Depends on the sample and groove I try to create.

Most if not all of my percusive instruments get played. I chumps the sh!t outta them joints!

But seriously, I like stretching out 4 pads with each representing a congo (from low to high) and putting together a nice pattern or two.

Same goes for the cowbell, claps, snaps or whatever.

it depends on what result youre after.. 'natural': loop it, 'kanye-like conga fill': play it, etc
im not comfortable doing percussion either..

Here in D.C. it's considered the go-go capital of the world. The go-go katz live by percussion instruments so I try to mimic those performances as best as possible.
