Thank all.
Mixing is a cumulative process.
Solution: track and mix individual channels at a lower level. if you are recording in 24-Bit, -18dBFS or thereabouts should do it.
Remember, you can overload the individual channels fine in a 32-Bit system during a mix. Just keep an eye on the mix buss. Really shouldn't be peaking over -6, -8dBFS before master.
If it still sounds quiet, you can add a compressor on the mix buss and squash those transients a bit and use the make up gain to boost the resulting level. That should get you another 3-4dB gain. Then you can add a brickwall limiter to squeeze another few dBs out of it.
Try not to peak over -0.3dBFS. Simple reason being that if your track ends up as an MP3, amongst other formats, the encoding doesn't handle transients very well.
