hey i have a question, i don't know if anyone has any suggestions but i thought i might ask anyway.

i usually use soundforge to chop up samples, i just like the bigger screen instead of the little lcd, plus it saves time for me.

anyway, say u have a nice bass drum sound but right after the bass drum is a hi hat. so i go in and get rid of the hi hat, but that makes the bass drum to choppy. i no on the mpc people say to add air to the end of the sample and then use decay to get it to sound right.
is there any function on soundforge that closely resembles that?
i know i can use the eq to cut out the hi, but i am mainly asking for other kinds of samples where i could not do that.

so there u go.
thanx.

Cut it and add a reverb. No more choppy.

do you mean add reverb to the whole sound? or to the cut area? you lnow what i mean?

I use the end, but experiment.

Also you can select the tail end of the wave and choose fade out. (I don't use sound forge so I don't know what this is under.) This sometimes helps.

you can filter out some of the mids and all of the high to eliminate the hihat!!

first of all insert silence at the end in SF which is the same as adding air to it and then reverb or decay. I'm not sure if Sf has a decay feature or not.

you don't need to insert silence, just reverb it and sf auto xtends the sample.

learn your envelopes
ADSR

Attack
Decay
Substain
Release

Properly adjusting your envelope(Just want Attack and Decay for this case)
Extend the sample, and add reverb should get you desirable results

Filter out the rest of the crap in the sample

Just remember if you are gonna add reverb add the right kind.....don't just add reverb and call it a wrap....make sure you get the sound you want

Too True, lately I've been not liking the sound of SF so much, it is very useful, but I have to make up the weird quality it puts on samples with analog eq when I use it in a song.

You really ned to tweek the reverb so that it gets really subtle on drum hits like this. Then I fade it if the tail is too long.

copy the end part of the chop to a new sound. reverse it.
if you put this sound in the mpc and hit it just before the kick drum finished, it can make it sound less choppy. You could fidddle with decay, attack etc too on both sounds.
Resample that result and you should have a less choppy kick. Recycle is a program that helps slicing drum loops, using the same logic, and you can change the decays 'n' stuff as u listen. It could save u time in the long run. :) .

Leave the hi hat. That shit sounds raw.

By gordongecko23 Mon Apr 12, 2004 6:14 pm
so you guys think recycle is better or sounds better than soundforge?

I use the fade function to get as much as possible of the sound I want. Zoom in and cut it right before the hi hat. Then add a little fade out to get rid of any extra noise at the end...i'll use a gradual fade and maybe do it like 4 times. For reverb try to get your hands on some impulse files that work with acoustic mirror, it's much better than the stock reverb stuff. Good for modeling sounds.
