As a drum sampler the 950/900 is still one of the best options.
Kicks, snares, hats... magic.... sp12/1200 is boomier, but I put them on the same level...
(Saying buying old is repeating history, is like telling a violinist not to buy a stradivarius..
Or that it's impossible to let your originality shine by playing a used steinway?)
Buying new is often just supporting short lifespan landfill junk.
Software samplers?
I found I NEEDED to layer 3 or 4 kicks & snares to get the punch I wanted back when I was using said... Using hardware samplers changed all of that...
But they're not for everyone... and you can get great results without them... As mentioned, just buy it.. if you don't like it sell it.
I think the 950 is overrrated in tems of it's abilities outside of the drum realm... people say it's amazing what it does to vinyl samples..... for me emax is better there... or the eps/eps16/asr10
The s3000/2800/3200/mpc3000 .... are really good snare machines... don't like them for much else... but the punch they give is unreal, especially if you layer up.
