As a drum sampler the 950/900 is still one of the best options.
Kicks, snares, hats... magic.... sp12/1200 is boomier, but I put them on the same level...

(Saying buying old is repeating history, is like telling a violinist not to buy a stradivarius..
Or that it's impossible to let your originality shine by playing a used steinway?)
Buying new is often just supporting short lifespan landfill junk.

Software samplers?
I found I NEEDED to layer 3 or 4 kicks & snares to get the punch I wanted back when I was using said... Using hardware samplers changed all of that...
But they're not for everyone... and you can get great results without them... As mentioned, just buy it.. if you don't like it sell it.

I think the 950 is overrrated in tems of it's abilities outside of the drum realm... people say it's amazing what it does to vinyl samples..... for me emax is better there... or the eps/eps16/asr10

The s3000/2800/3200/mpc3000 .... are really good snare machines... don't like them for much else... but the punch they give is unreal, especially if you layer up.

There really is no need for all this.

You need to make your own mind up instead of asking a subjective question.

Buy the machine and try it for yourself, if you dont like it sell it.

You wont lose money on a S-950 unless you paid too much to begin with.

I want to make myself clear...I did not mean to insult anyone here. I am surprised that I got responded to as if I upset some people. Then all of a sudden violins are being throw at me in debate. lol
Listen, I really just wanted to be the voice of a different perspective. Nothing is wrong with a facsimile of a working model or system. I look back on the by-gone era of hip-hop with fondness.
Take a breathe it's not that deep.

Cheers,
Ian

PS "to the initial poster: get yourself a Z4 or Z8 and then at 24bit 96khz or lower sample the vinyl drums you like....therefore no need to hassle with the s950. yes it is overhyped."

Your input is as valid as anyone else's.... everyone agreeing is just a masturbation/patting each other on the ass fest.....
Anyway, that's why I said hw samplers are not for everyone... I've worked ITB, and have about 14 hw sampers now... as I prefer the sound.... but alot people may be happier/more productive ITB... using software samplers... or not as highly rated hw samplers.

I hafta respectively disagree. I have no issues with the 4k/z4's engine but I don't believe it sounds the same by lowering the bit rate or bandwidth as it does with the 9/950's. Nor do I think owning vintage gear means you need to make by-gone era music or cannot be innovative.

I'm not sure whether or not that comparison is valid. Piano and violin are acoustic instruments. Samplers are not.

The 3000 sounds a bit draker especiall on snares and on hi hats it seems to give it more crispyness so im very curious on how a s950 would sound. I had a fellow producer wanting to trade me his 4000 for my 3000 which I might do just cause I nees alot of drums when creating and I could use the 950 for drums on certain tracks

I guess I have to explain more clearly.
My searches for the ultimate tone brought me to try out lots of different samplers.... some have an amazing tone, without needing any tweaking/messing around for hours...

Some people who use acoustic instruments also seek the ultimate tone.... do you get the comparison now? ... [950/sp12/1200=stradivarius/steinway/fazioli of drum samplers etc.]

Conversely, having a piano with a great sound may push you to be a lazier player... that also applies to samplers... the ultimate is never the ultimate... sometimes you have to get back to using a casio/badly tuned piano to even appreciate the 'better' tone of 'high-end' offerings.. or to start playing well again... like making every note count.
(Check out 'Me and You and Everyone We Know' OST .... very cool indie film soundtrack ... done on a casio)

Could anyone upload some examples of the S900/950? I'm interested about those samplers but wonder how they really sound, especially for drums.

what i meant was 24bit 96khz or 24bit 44.1khz sampling vinyl will make your drums sound good enough.
you know Borat that is what is needed a dictionary of MPC wavs.
We should have the same song say "Just to get a Rep" by Gangstar and take the drums from it and sample it in the:
S950
3200xl
s5000
MPC60 thru 5000

and other samplers.

We should create a room in the forum for people to download the wav files so they can hear it for themselves.
Or does this exist somewhere?

Cheers,
Ian
PS in fact come to think about it if anyone wants to participate in doing this I will make an additional page on my mixchpelted.com website where I will post the wav's for free. you can send the wav's to me via dropbox. Let me know if you are down. If there is enough interest I will start working on this and create a page in here just for this purpose.

Well, I can certainly relate to it.

In the 4k -Pitch,resample,pitch,resample with the eq ect. This should add vibe and artifacts to the samples. To me its like a big turntable or tape machine :smoker:
Set a q link to pitch all samples and the same to envelope release ectect. Then start triggering samples randomly and tweaking the q links and resample for instance the decaying pitched sample tails.Trim and normalize. This boosting the quiet, pitched parts will add old school fuzz, lofi ness and suprizes just like ye olde daze.Enjoi....
