DaSoof wrote:when u people say dre brings people in to play live music, do u mean he single strike samples or the whole loops that we hear?

coz to me, his music sounds programed, rather then played.

I think its both. i agree with you that sometimes it sounds programmed. BUt i Think he gets the musician to play it and then record it via midi. So When its quantized it sounds programmed. Either that or he samples the parts into the sequencer. So even though the phrase might not be quantized, its still the same phrase being used over and over again for the whole beat-this is somewhat true cause if you listen really close you can hear when each parts start and stop.........especially with his moog ish wormy leads.........not all of em, but ive heard a couple on the chornic where im like "hey thats a phrase" like listen for when the white noise behind it cuts off.

I also know that scott storch does alot of the keys. So even if dre does the arrangement or even the melody.........storch is comming in with his own programmed sounds, etc. Or his own progressions/melodies and dre's exploiting them. Anyway around it, Dre utalizes musicians. If his beats are fully programmed or live, its all about using your resources.

Ive also thought that dre may sample alot of records, chop em, rearrange em........then utalize his crew of musicians to interpolate them. His chopping skills are so good, that alone they are original tracks, but he uses synthsizers to get that clean dre sound. feel me?

I personally think, part of being a good producer, is knowing when you should utalize someone elses talent.

THIS IS ALL OF COURSE Speculation. I have no 100% clue. But thats what i can conclude with my detective skills.

peace.

agreed. Really i mean, Alot of times hiphop is all about character and depth; you can have the simplest shit ever, but as long as its got character and bangs, its good. ALthough alchemists beats may have good arrangement and composition wise. Dr.dres got him on sonic quality and depth, character, punch.

Now imagine if dre mixed an alchemist track. That would be interesting to hear.

obviously this is matter of opinion. BUt I would never compare dre to alchemist. No **** way in hell!

The production on No One Can Do It and Ni66az4life is absolutely incredible...

Mind Blowin this track just has the perfect title...The beat just did that to me when I first really listened to it...It blew my mind...you have to really listen to see what he is doing with a turntable and drum breaks...sickness...

Whirlwind Pyramid...again killing it with the turntables and fader...DEE JAY DOCTOR DRE....

Formula...what else needs to be said...This was my favorite cut when I first bought this album....that bass drum was hitting hard...

Portrait of a Masterpiece...a track that gets seriously overlooked...The sound it had was ahead of its time I believe...and fvcking DOC just killed it with what imo is the best verse ever...

Appetite for Destruction....Dre at his sinister best...The way he just combined everything perfectly in that track had my jaws dropping....the samples he put in to end a verse and begin a new one...just flawless...One of my all time favorite Dre tracks...

Approach to Danger....Another dark, scary type beat...great use of a rock guitar sample....

I really think alot of heads forget what Dre has given to us as fans...I think when they think of Dre they think The Chronic, Doggystyle and 2001 and thats it....Most people forget the FOUR classics he dropped before 1992....I think Dre doesn't get appreciated enough...

Dre is the producer version of LL Cool J....Niether one of them has schit to prove these days regarding thier legendary status in Hiphop and music period....Both STILL putting out music 20 years later.....and yes, people are liking it....maybe not you or your friends, but somebody is because they keep selling records...

btw, I prefer the younger, hungrier versions of these legends to todays stars....

That's a retarded comment if I ever heard one... The pick of Eminem was part of his talent... Dre has that "golden ear"... Picking up Em was the talent the same way one of us findin that "perfect" sample for our tracks is our talent...

It wouldn't take a 'golden ear' to know that america would eat up Eminem if MTV played the fluck outta him (which is how any musician makes big money in the music biz anyway, the labels pay MTV and the major radio stations to overplay thier artists until everyone knows all the words to the songs, but I digress). My main point is that we all know it was hooking up with Snoop that saved his career (Eminem was a big help in people remembering who he was past 1993, though)

Oh yeah, BTW, Dre is HELLA overrated

I'd have to say that this is 100% true.

I'd also have to say that for back in the day, Dre was an aight producer, but dude was already 25 when that "Straight outta..." sh!t dropped. My man is like 42 now. Anyone thats been making beats for 20 years and was a grown-@ss man when he started should be SO ill by now that there would be no argument if he was overrated or the best or whatever. Besides the fact that he don't write his own rhymes (not that havin a ghostwriter does anything to your producer cred, it just makes me wonder how much of the actual composition and beatmaking he does). There's a HELLA big difference from producing a track and Executive Producing an album. He may know how to chop, and re-arrange and all that, but what good is talent if your final product sounds not only HEAVILY recycled from beat to beat, but also doesn't (sorry to all who disagree) move anyone outside of the thug community.

I mean, when Dre 2001 dropped, I thought cats was clowing about how amped up they were about it. I was all "that dude fell off so long ago, there's NO WAY anyone's gonna buy his sh!t, they only bought his last album because of Snoop". And low and behold, Dre 2001 sold like a mofo, but only because of this "new whiteboy" that could "actually rap". Which is funny, because I'd say that about half of my favorite emcees are white, or at least would be considered white by the industry. But I digress, yet again.

Dre is so completely overrated. Its like dude said:
Boogie Man wrote:Dre is the producer version of LL Cool J....Niether one of them has schit to prove these days regarding thier legendary status in Hiphop and music period....Both STILL putting out music 20 years later

And if anyone tried to say LL Cool J was one of the best Emcees in the biz today, we'd all (well maybe not all of us, but a bunch) would laugh straight at you. Just 'cause their style was tight back in the day (which they weren't, we just had MUCH MUCH lower standards for hip hop then) don't mean that they are still on the top.

Oh, and Cyrus, not to put you out like this, but The Beatles were one of the most complex, innovative and experimental musicians the worlds has EVER known (not even Pink Floyd tops 'em), it's just that the sh!t that gets radio play sucked. Which brings me to my favorite point. Everyone keeps talking about how much money someone makes being somehow relative to how much talent they have. DJDrew asked:
DJDREW wrote:So what number one charting producer do you guys like?

And I'M VERY proud to say that I cant think of a single top charting musician of anykind that I like. 99% of music on the radio or MTV is straight GARBAGE. That includes, but isn't limited to: 50 Cent, Kanye West, the Game, Canibus, Luda and the rest of the "MTV's Cribs" "hip-Hop" scene.

BTW, Dre did in NO way discover Eminem. Plenty of heads (my boy included) listened to Slim before Dre got to him. I remember going to buy the first Dre produced Eminem CD the day it dropped, my boy was SUPED UP! We put that sh!t into the deck and I was never so glad that I didn't buy some sh!t. Dre RUINED Eminem. Slim was just as witty and sarcastic before Dre, but minus the gangsta lean, a real fun cat to listen to. Now he's like a typical pop rapper but with talent, which is somehow even more nauseating. D@mn, now I'm in a bad mood 'cause commercial radio destroys good music :x
