each verse with its own track or all on the one track????

Each verse on a different track sounds a bit unnecessary but......it depends how good the vocalist is & how many tracks you have available. Most of the time you are likely to construct the final vocal from various different takes on different tracks, but it is unlikely that what is good or bad is going to be neatly divided into the different verses. Also, if you have got each verse on different tracks you need to make sure they are all eq'd & processed the same way ....unless you want them to all sound very different.

A common situation will be to run through the whole song a few times, then may be re-do a few specific lines that need a rework.

You might find you have a singer who is really good ..... but can only really do a few lines at a time perfectly. That can be hard work..... This engineer I used to work with who has been engineering since the mid '70s told me about this big UK pop act he worked with in the early '90s. On their records it sounded like the lead guy had a really strong voice but in actual fact he could only manage to record a few lines at a time in the studio. That is why they faded into obscurity only a year after having a #1 record ...... because it was too difficult, & therefore expensive, to record them.

I like to do all the verses on one track...chorus on a seperate track and then layer on another one.....that's just my amo.

it all depends on the person in the booth.. my boy smoove might usually spits the whole song verse,hook,verse,hook straight thru and i just give em another track to double and adlib but some people are more high maintenance..

What type of joint are you doing? What type of machine are you
recording on? Like, if you got 16 tracks and 12 of then are taken up by music, ish you might wanna try and get all verses and choruses on one track, even as a comp, to free up space for the overdubs, harmonies, whatever. But I don't put each verse on a separate track unless there is more than one artist on the joint.
If I'm doing pop or R&B, it's gonna be like at least 4 tracks for each set of vocals. So that's 4 for the verses, 4 for the hook, 4 for the bridge.
etc.

I've tried both ways. It's very hard to get all the verses to sound right when you put them on seperate tracks. That's for hip hop. I don't think most singers can go through an entire song in one take.

I usually record each verse on a different track. I dont know why, I guess so I have more control over the project. I mean, some artist dont have the same energy on each verse, or the same volume, so I have to find a way to equal them out. Like the verse might be cool, but then when they get to the hook, it takes a 3db jump. If its all on one track then I am stuck, but If I have them on seperate tracks, then I can level them out. As far as the sound being the same, as long as you bus everything the same the sound should remain the same. But like others have said, It depends on what you are recording.

usually I give each artist their own track.... if it's only one... then they only get one track for their verses... if it was 3... one on each verse, then all the verses would be on seperate tracks... thas just how I do it though
