sound forge has auto region, which is in somewhat equal to zoning. it has reverse,
time stretch and loads of else. you might also want to peep recycle for
chopping.

I've used cool edit/adode audition for years...very powerful, especially for the price. The noise reduction, beat detection, all kicks ass. If you don't want to pay for software and still not steal anything, check out audacity at sourceforge.net. It's a very powerful editor, and will take you very far.

I had the same question as, but can someone explain how to zone/slice a sample w/ audacity, the beat finder option is sh*** its off the beat, i just need a free simple piece of software that will zone/slice a sample for me, cuz i tried using my mpc 1000 the other night, to isolate one shot snare and bass drum samples, and it was a bi**h.

you need a beat slicer not an audio editor if you want automatic chops I suggest recycle...

Check out Audacity as a freebie audio editor.
There is also a Freebie Open Source program like Recycle called Free Cycle. (beleive it or not.) Looks good too. Not sure if it's PC or Mac ready yet. hopefully, somebody will port it ovetr to these platforms soon.
Peace.
