Note that I did all that manual autochromatic before BlueBox came out, and I helped a little in testing it. Makes the whole process much easier. But if you're just going to use it to lay down a few basslines, you can get away with 16 Levels (Note) alone, which is instant to set up.
Chromatic Program layout is one of those things you can get into if it helps you, not a "must have", but I play electric bass anyway, and like old-school sample like Mellotron, which work beautifully on the MPC. (The samples I have used to be on Hollow Sun who then put all their samples into a commercial kit "Zero-G Nostalgia" but I still have them and will probably upload them to my site soon.)
If you do a chromatic layout, there are a few chord shapes you can use:
