do i even need to worry about it until i get into midi? would it do me any good to use it with my samples or what? as far as i can tell, its just so i can play whatever external gear using the pads? thanks

"chromatic" is a piano scale term. when you sit down at a piano and hit each key in a row, you are playing a chromatic scale. auto chromatic puts a sample (ie bass sample) across the pads so you can play the pads 1,2,3,4, etc. like you're sitting down at a piano.

do you think you would need this now?

well kinda sounds like i could and kinda sounds like i don't. i know about scales and all that but when you say it puts a sample accross the pads so you can play like a piano part of me wants to think, ok i can setup steriod's pgm, throw my sample in and go at it. but the other part of me says that doesn't sound right. anyway, i understand now that its just for midi. thanks

thank stereoroid. put that into your internal mem with your tabula rasa seq and it'll be there every time for you

this is a major timesaving tip

open up your mpc w/ nothing loaded.

think to yourself: what tracks do you usually have? drums, of course. hi hats. rides. bass. sample. etc.

name all these tracks for seq 1 in advance.

now, save everything in your mpc to your internal mem. turn autoload on, and then boom - next time you power on your mpc, you don't have to rename tracks. plus, this keeps things organized and you will always have the same type ish in the same place, song to song.

for example: track 1-8 for me, i've reserved for drums. it goes "kick, snare, hat, ride, cym, stick, perc, fill"

next 8 are misc melody names, including "sample, bass"

next 8 are unnamed midi tracks, w/ midi out ranging from 1A - 8A to program reason stuff. the next 8 are the same, except 1B for my sp404...

this is a "tabula rasa." even though it's less blank than the original, it's a more ordered nothingness. you just spend less time flipping and typing, and it keeps you organized. you understand?

understand completely but i don;t want to prename my tracks. i'm not always going to use a ride or whatever. but i guess i could setup the autochrom pgm as my tabula rasa whenever i get a keyboard?

Note that I did all that manual autochromatic before BlueBox came out, and I helped a little in testing it. Makes the whole process much easier. But if you're just going to use it to lay down a few basslines, you can get away with 16 Levels (Note) alone, which is instant to set up.

Chromatic Program layout is one of those things you can get into if it helps you, not a "must have", but I play electric bass anyway, and like old-school sample like Mellotron, which work beautifully on the MPC. (The samples I have used to be on Hollow Sun who then put all their samples into a commercial kit "Zero-G Nostalgia" but I still have them and will probably upload them to my site soon.)

If you do a chromatic layout, there are a few chord shapes you can use:

Code: Select all*
 *   = major
 *

*
*    = minor
 *

* *
 *   = sixth (add the extra note to major or minor)
 *

and so on. It's not just for basslines...

yeah but playing all that stuff in 16 levels doesn't work that well. Samples cut off and stuff. (with os 2.0).

I think that right now, note on is poly, but note off seems to be only "mono" or "channel"...

Am I missing a new feature here, does V2 have an autochromatic feature where I can take one sound and automatically make a pitched program?
If yes, how do I get to this feature (did not see it over the weekend when I played with the new OS).
Thanks,
Jay

nah, you're not missing anything. the new os doesn't have this feature.

it's actually kind of better to get steered away from this kind of autochroming stuff. samples shouldn't be stretched that far, really...i do it every now and then but it's really better to multisample, the end result doesn't necessarily sound like it came from a computer...

taking 1 c note and chroming it has always sounded bad to me, even when i used to do it when i produced in acid back in 98. you can and should do better - UNLESS you're going for the chipmunked note sound (no, not talking about kanye, i mean what happens when you chrome a note across a broad range of octaves)

however, if you're just trying to get your melody idea down, use 16 levels til you can get better samples.
