The swing function can be used on the whole groove if you want. Whatever sounds right to you. I used to practice using swing by trying to recreate the New Jack Swing beats made by Teddy Riley back in the late 80's and early 90's.

Check out the group called Guy. He used swing effectively to create some great beats. I usually try a swing factor around 66 to start to get the ghost kicks following my main kick to sound right.

Okay 10 min ago I used 60% on my kicks it makes my double kick sounds really wack...so i did 52% (60>52%) you can slighty hear the diff  the double kicks follow eacother a bit quicker...makes the whole thing swing a lil bit more (explains the name:))

but I think I can use the swing function much better, some handy tips on this?

[B]This is phat. I didn't even know of this feature until I read this post. I'm going to try it out with some of my work. :;):  :;): Even though my tracks already got swing.

I'm no expert on drum programming as there are a billion methods to freak a billion drum sounds. First off, the swing feature is one of the main reasons I invested in the MPC line. I like to put sounds right where I need them to be. What I find is that if you never mess with the swing feature, your beats may sound too electronic (the human feel is not there). Don't get me wrong, you can get by without it, but you probably won't after you figure out how to use this feature. Below is a little "wannabe" MPC-Tutor example of swing.

1-Bar (Kick/Snare) Loop with NO SWING @ 1/16 quantisation:
Kick Kick Snare Kick Kick Kick Snare Kick
..1.............2...........3.............4.........

1-Bar (Kick/Snare) Loop with only the Kick set to 63% SWING @ 1/16 quantisation:
Kick Kick Snare    Ki-Kick Kick Snare    Ki-
..1.............2...........3.............4.........

Bad example...I know. I would experiment applying swing individually to any percussion hit. I say "apply swing individually" because you don't necessarily want to apply swing to every instrument. I'll leave the snare alone and apply swing to the other stuff at times. But then again I try anything, so it's pretty much up to you to be risky and break barriers. Just trust your ears. I've applied swing to a chopped piano sample just so that it lands in the right place. That's the key thing for me. Placing your sound in the exact place you need it to make the song sound right. Hmmn, maybe that's why people go the computer sequencing route? But that's another forum topic. To all the headz that undastand this feature...add on...peace

haha no prob my comp sometimes does it 2 :;):

Yeah I tried it and now understands why it's calles swing...I set mij kick to 62 en snare to 58 and it sounds more natural!!

only one thing..if I set the for example the kick to 63% and dom't like it how do I undo it?

pressing undo button, or set it back to 50%??

I get the feeling both don't work and to be shure I always copt the seq

u dont have to use the swing %, you can also select either earlier or later and then 1-23 in the field next to it, this will shift the sounds an exact amount each time

try using a later offset of about 10 in 16th timing on hihats at half volume, and another track playing hats with no swing at 8th timing, works with all sounds but always handy for hats.

ps sorry if u already know this or if its obvious...
