for live recordings, i thought spesh's scratching was dope. it's a good showing of fader skill. while i would have liked to have heard a phrase scratched, that may have just been the scratchlive in me. i know i can't do what spesh did on those scratches. my scratching was heavily doctored and quantized in acid. i'm just not good enough yet, but after this summer we will see.

had spesh tracked this monster, i think a lot of you wouldn't have been hit by mix issues. if anything i wish our beats were at the same mixing level so they could have been judged on composition alone, as opposed to mix quality.

a lot of spesh's beats sound like they're coming from an 8 bit engine, and then a deeper sample drops. i always like that. if i could give any advice on this one it'd be for the drums - you know how your hats start off the drum section of this song? it sounds like they're all at full velocity. particularly when the hats are the only drum audible, i would suggest varying the hat pace/attack/velocity to provide more texture, you see?

as for the "repetitive" comment, yours is probably less repetitive than mine in this case - however, since yours goes on for a lot longer, it's more noticeable and that's why people have made noise about it. this is something i face all the time - length verse patience.

spesh scares the shit out of me as a producer because honestly his stuff sounds sooooo much like mine just before my big change last year, and he's been at it for a lot less time than i have. plus it's getting better fast, and he's learning the switch - which is NOT easy, as many of you can attest.

my biggest tips to you would be these as of now - work on hats (your kicksnare patterns are dope, just keep that up), work on sticks and rolls and ghosthits to complement your original pattern. if you ever plan on getting an audio interface, i suggest the delta 66 - it's what i use and it's got great converters/spdif/built in small mixer. great little card.

On the real though: I think 'BEATBATTLES' put this way are ridiculous... because one just can't compare one Song to another one objectively, besides personal flavor or so.

So, I suggest people who would like to battle should do so by using the same basic sample and build a track on that. The sample should also be available for the people who shall judge upon the beat.
Then u got the source of the beat plus u can hear the beats of the competiitors and then u can judge either on the technical aspect of who flipped the sample iller or whos taken some other approach or ish like dat.. nahmmean??

Thats how i would get down... thats really interesting and challenging... and u can learn alot.... If someone wants to do some like that, I would be down with it... (HOPEFULLY not that Boy FLUENT...he's way out)

problem with that is track useability. the producers would have to pretty similar to choose the same sample. for example, i would sample something with not necessarily a good melody, but isolated notes so i could chop and recombine. another person might sample a soul loop to...well, loop. give either of us the other person's type sample and we may very well not react with any kind of good song.

not to mention, i use beat battle songs as actual releases/songs for emcees later. two of the beats on edge city were actual battle songs that i just put on a cd.

Well said Stan the Man, But realistically speaking these two cats,no offense Nym. They Don't understand the foundation of hiphop! well nym kinda, but Spesh track was , I'll save that for the next thread. Me and Nym will battle again.........? useing only samples to build a track no words or scratching just beat battleing. All together Nym's track was well mix. 8)

let me dive right in, Spesh ,you need to get some help on Flaring man that was crap, beat was sloppy period. Your Beat didn't even have color, bounce, jiggy, etc. it was just plann dull maaaaan!. I didn't even listen to all of the track (Spesh)just curious! how long you've been DJing, and making beats?

Nym- Your Track was just Plan Lazy, It didn't even move me this time, altho- I love the way you took you time mixing, that's what's going to get you in the door of oppurtunity!. Over all I wasn't nodding ,But I voted for NYM because this young Cat has the Producer's Mixer's Ear's.

PS. Nym bring some Soul to your traks! looking forward to battleing you w/ jus samples, Nym ,you know I'll eat ya lunch don't you ?

Thats because I have an 8 bit soundcard. Trust me I know about the poor mix but as of right now there isn't shit I can do about it, except keep on the grind and work with what I've got.

I've been scratching since November of '04 and I started making beats on an SP 303 last February. I've had my MPC for about 6 months. I'm still relatively new at this.

Must be because I don't sample the same 70's soul music as everyone else. I'm not trying to sample what has already been sampled a million times before. Your statement isn't even relevent. How is it that your so insightful that you can listen to one track and tell what I do and don't understand. If you listened to any of my other songs maybe you'd see that I compose a complete different sound than what half the dudes on this site make. I understand a lot more than you may believe, but thats not the issue at hand.
the scratching on splesh sounds like your just moving your hands in a random way and lucky if anything decent sounding comes out
No I new what sound I was going for. I just learned flares and how to infuse crabs a week 1/2 ago and I was trying to throw that in there. As far as sloppyness, I agree I agree I am not great but I do know that my skill is coming up quick and if I don't look at it in a trial and error point of view, I'll never amount to shit with it.
Either way, I have much respect for Nym, I personally like my beat more, but I greatly respect dudes production style and anyone of his beats on Edge City would've smoked me hands down.

You know after listening to your myspace page I half to laugh at you offering critisms and advice. Your beats have a ways to go as well. And I heard no cuts.

i wish people would post beats on savefile.com sometimes.

when i'm at work it is the only one that doesn't get blocked.

anyone want to upload these two tracks to savefile.com quickly to humor me?

if not, i ain't mad atcha. just bored and i don't have internet at home currently.

I don't know if I'm the only one who was feeling nym's track, especially the melody. Seems like it...
