I tried looking through this forum, but I really didn't see the answer anywhere.

The MPC 4000 and 5000 have a sequencer resolution of 960 ppq, while the 2500 and 1000 only have 96 ppq.

I was wondering if the JJ OS changes that, so that the 1000/2500 will have the same resolution as the 4000/5000.

If it doesn't, then are there any plans to change this in the future?


I'm actually a 3000 owner, and the 3000's resolution is 96 ppq, but I was considering picking up a 1000 with the JJ OS.

im not sure how the resolution will help with the quantize,i depend on my metronome,,99.9% of the time my quantize is off,,theres not a musician in the world that is dead machine on key!!,,so just like dude in the video said "no drummer plays the high hat on beat or its "boring""

but again im not sure how the resolution would help..

or maybe im getting the question???

You are correct. Resolution will not help quantize.

But, higher resolution will help your recording when the quantize is off. The MPC 1000/500/2500/3000 all have 96 ticks per quarter note. That means that you have 96 different spots that a note can land on for every quarter note when the quantize is off. The MPC 4000/5000 all have 960 ticks per quarter note. That means that you have 960 different spots that a note can land on for every quarter note when the quantize is off.

So, the higher the resolution, the more "human" your unquantized recording can sound.

Doubling the tempo on a 1000/500/2500/3000 will give you 192 ppq which is still a lot less than the 960 that the 4000/5000 have.

A lotta talkin on the technique tip... but in reality, the quanitizing thing is just 1 element of making a beat groovy. Dynamics is the second one..

And on the hip-hop history tip, Dre, DJ Quik, Will-I-Am and Dilla all did make hits on the mpc 3000 without having 960 ppqs...
Primo and PR did to on the MPC 60 and 2kxl.. so this is some sort like "yeah? whatever!" type of topic :)

^ Agree with Stan Steezo.

We all know that you can program killer grooves with 96 ppq. Of course, we're talking about Rap/Electronic/Pop music here, but for types of music with non-programmed beats, you shouldn't be programming the beats in a sequencer anyway!

Now in my experience-- the place where the low resolution becomes noticeable is attempting to program realistic shakers and tambs. But if you really want that stuff to sound realistic, you shouldn't be trying to use one-hit samples at all...

i use TC strength never above 50% at double resolution (192 ppq) and i highly doubt anyone would ever notice the resolution of my sampler.
