The Akai MPC500 is unusable. Not imperfect, completely unusable for serious work.

Example.

    1. Turn on
    2. Mode Load
    3. Cursor Right , Data Wheel Right, Cursor Down, Do It
    4. Pad 1, Do It
    5. Track, Pad 1

The sample should be triggered, but it isn't. Why?

    6. Mode Program, Data Wheel Right

It isn't assigned!

Now imagine you are in a good mood and sit down to play something. You assign 12 samples, which requires a lot of turns and clicks, ...

I never thought I'd be the one to have to pull out this ole mpc-forums chestnut,
but you've asked for it:

Your not doing it right!

There I said it, and 'nuff said.

Edit: It sounds like your really pouring on the midi connections, the slider functions, and all this so called "serious" work that maybe the 500 wasn't made for.
After all its a portable or entry level MPC.
Its the least powerful of the line.

If you want to do everything under the sun and have the MPC at the center of an advanced studio setup, get an advanced studio grade machine!
The 500 doesn't even have separate outs!
Apparently it wasn't made to do whatever hell bent project you seem to be set on.

Dont buy a hyundai and then get mad when it doesn't hurtle you to the front of the pack at nascar.
If you want to race nascar, save your money and get a flucking racecar.

That doesn't make it unusable more than it seems to indicate that your trying to use it beyond its capacity or possibly just plain ole incorrectly.

Or put another way, it does everything I need it to do without a major problem, and actually does more than I need. So apparently it is in fact usable.
And since I'm not the only one who's not having trouble using it, it seems more likely that its YOU! Not the 500.

You seem to want something cheap that works like something more expensive. Life generally doesn't work that way.

YOU apparently bought the wrong machine for your intended purposes, so why dont you just sell it and run out and get something more suitable.
Wahla!

And make sure to let us know what you get so I can tell you how THATS unusable.
:)

Good insight.

Wish I read this before buying mine.

Hell Fl Studio can do a better job than this piece of crap.

Should have just gone with an MPD for fun.

Huh? Talking to me?

I know what the program is and does.
As for the MPC500 not so much.

After reading the reviews you would probably agree that buying a instrument for $400-600 with bugs is concerning.

I can do just about everything the MPC500 can do with a program called Reaper. (Flip tails its Fl Studio, give or take)

Not to rag on the MPC (HELL I love it) but your just paying to be able to preform live or to show off.

However........

Programs are used just to emit sounds. Making it from scratch takes real skill and learning techniques to preform beat patterns.

lol. It's all in taste homie, if you guys don't like the 500 then go sell it.

I've been doing this all of my short time on earth. I majored in production at a good music school until I couldn't afford it. We mixed on Pro-Tools and Digital Performer on top of the line computers with thousands of dollars worth of mics and preamps. 64 channel boards. $3000 soundcards.

And most of the time I would hang out in the hallways making sequences on my 500.

That doesn't mean you will like it. But I do have a lot to ask out of my equipment and know how to make my 500 do most of it.

What?
I'm not talking premade programs.
I'm talking about making your own.
Again, just because you think you know what you're talking about doesn't mean you do.

ok, i gotta clear something up, 2 amegos on here are ragging on the 500, one dude dj whatever the **** ur name is, you dont even now what a program is on the mpc!! wtf!! dude you should just stop typing on this thread, and shut the **** up, cause you sound **** stupid, dont open ur mouth if you dont know what ur saying,. and as for the other guy, dude, the mpc 500 is what it is, you can always midi it with another program, or something if you want to get more tecnical,. it is limited, but use it as a tool, not your whole **** studio, jesus **** christ what is wrong with you people, you cant go out mand spend 600.00 dollars and expect to have a whole **** studio, this is real **** life,. ive used reason for a very long time, and i got my 500 like 4 months ago, and i love it, it feels so much better then my mpd32 thats hooked up to reason, and fl studio, my mpc is way more responsive, and it just feels right,. and yes, for all the things you get in reaswon, and for what you get in the mpc it is pricey, but its hardware, hardware is always pricey,.. so stop bitching and ndo something about it.....

 It's incredibly fascinating how regardless of how it's worded, people keep responding with the same irrelevant points.

mebbe ppl aint pretendin when mispellin? mebbe its theyre real language. srry y'all try it dis way
no ones sayin u needa get a top studio fo 600. but whateva u gost best werk or u mightas well light up that green and ash it out no wut um sayin? akai busts out wack OS dat dont werk, the machine LOOKS like itd be good, but its a playa con tryin to hustle u outa yo cash. 4 reals on da inside is bugged out code dat a dime hooka woodnt even touch. akai useda roll big, but they bailed and new ****** took ova dat cant cut worth shit. now we gots impure goods bein sold at a premium price. **** that shit *****. time we made it clear we aint bein played out like dat. ppl on the streets been fraid to call em out but its time dey new. they needa start answerin to locs round here and takin care of dem needs or were gunna pay em a visite gangsta style. feel me?

lol

It doesn't matter if it's $6,000 or $60, if the OS is locked up then the hardware is useless without begging and riding on Akai's back. If they can't satisfy a customer's needs, that person has no means of taking it upon themself to do things right. The Akai OS is poor quality, and cannot be trusted because it is known to have critical flaws. The solution was JJOS. So if you got a 1000 or 2500, you're tight. But 500? You're under Akai's table begging for scraps. That's no way to live respectably.

Before you buy a MPC500, you need to know and understand this. The machine itself is good. The OS is good, some times, for some things. That's not the problem. The issue is that Akai OS is not dependable for everyone, even if people lead you to believe it is. With JJOS, word is the critical bugs like load/save problems are fixed. With Akai OS, THE MOST BASIC FUNCTIONS MAY FAIL AND LET YOU DOWN. Do you not realize how fundamental that is? It doesn't matter if it's a $60,000 award-winning piece of gear, if it's likely at all that you may have your work vanish at any time IT IS UNUSABLE.

What if Mozart composed on the MPC, but oops, some bug wiped it out. No one would ever hear. Maybe you bought your MPC to make $5 beats and if something is lost, oh well. Some of us intended on using it as a solid piece of gear, LIMITED OR NOT. If it were solid and dependable then nothing else would matter that much as it'd just be luxury changes. But we're not there yet. It's like you have your nice car that could use a new paint job, but long before that you'd better fix the brakes because at any moment they could and do fail, leaving you flying down the highway with no power over the hunk of steel.

If Akai gave us the source code all of this would solve itself. I'm asking them to let me pop the hood to my own car. But they bolted it shut so only authorized personnel from their company can get in. People take it in to them, and they CAN'T FIX IT. Imagine if your car wasn't serviceable by you. Imagine if people weren't able to change parts, and custom modify it because the hood was welded shut with protection mechanisms. THEN YOU DON'T OWN IT. Just give us access to the engine under the hood of the product WE BOUGHT. JJ has access somehow, but if he didn't imagine how lame the MPCs would be.

Instead of taking attacks on Akai personally you should recognize the truth of the situation, that you have an unserviceable car that is known to break down randomly. Maybe it'll happen at the worst time for you and cause pain. Or maybe yours works perfectly, but if you had access to the engine you could tweak it to be even more to your liking. You don't want that? Akai doesn't listen until it hits their profits. People need to know that the MPC500 and 5000 are dependent on the shotty Akai OS, and the only reason why the 1000/2500 are hits is because of JJOS. Then they'll stop buying them, and Akai listens.

i can hear you on this one, and probably you should of post this instead of the other stuff... but so far mine hasn't bugged out and i got mine used... there are katz who have made tons of beats with the 500 already and all over youtube, some with problems, some without... so in short, once again, "Research Before Purchasing..." JAH-MON...
