HAS ANYONE SAMPLED THE GRATEFUL DEAD?

If by sampled you mean followed them around for three years and once scraped a sweat patchouli oil mixture off they're backs while they were sleeping then yeah, I sampled em.

All this talk of the Grateful Dead and no one has produced a sample list
I wanted to be that person so I went over to the breaks dot com and was shocked when the search only produced this

then I went and searched on google and searched Grateful Dead Breaks and Samples and nothing that I could see
This seems strange since I can remember Q tip talking about Grateful Dead breaks in and interview once

Seems strange to me that Jean Grae would be the only one who used a GD sample
I bet a lot more have used them but do not want to say
because like most hippie bands the Gratful Dead is a conglomerate and you best believe they would be on your ass like the Turtles if they got word of samples not being cleared."Like woah man free love and all and like a dollar for a cheese sandwich made by frined's Squirrel and Blue here but that will be 40k for the use of the sample groove love child I need to buy more ugly colored shirts to keep up with the hip hop kids who wear those hoodies that look like a pokemon vomited on "

Maybe so... but none of my friends who follow the dead wear tie dye. or any funky fashy colors puke pokemon weirdo bulls**t. anyway i tried the-breaks too and all that came up was that jean grae track. someones gotta know somethin thats had gd samples and i dont mean nasty hippie biohazards

Grateful Dead is just one of those bands that are too expensive to sample, thats why you won't see alot of signed artist using their music.

Like the Doors and Jimi Hendrix, I only know that JayZ and Freestyle Fellowship sampled them but who else? Not that many because groups like GD were big time famous in their time and they were hit makers. Think a record company is gonna let you sample a hit record so you can make a hit on your own? Nope they want 75% of what you make from that song.

ATCQ sampled Jimi for "Scenario." Who was it Oh No that did that all Jimi Hendrix remix album? Dunno if that was an official release. Somebody used "Voodoo Child" for something I'm pretty sure.

I think the Beastie Boys used some Jimi Hendrix sample

Oh, thats right, Tribe sampled 'Little Miss Lover' for the drums. Cypress Hill sampled 'Are You Experience' for the chorus of 'How I Could Just Kill A Man' and Pharsyde sampled the intro for 'Passing Me By'. Damn now its coming back. The Golden Era. But JayZ is the only one I heard that sampled the Doors.

there was a group called psycho realm. a side project of b-real from cypress hill. they used a lot of jimi hendrix and doors samples. one of them being all along the watchtower. but they never ended up on the official album just on some unreleased compilation later on. i thinks its kinda hard to sample from these guys nowadays because all this music is corporately owned now.

as far as the grateful dead, i don't know. im not surprised theres a lack of samples. i've always found their music a little too folksy sounding for hip hop. at least what i've heard and i haven't delved extensively into their catalogue either. im sure they have at least a couple of songs that can be flipped though.

i spent a few days in toronto in an apartment with only grateful dead tapes . didn't hear any decent samples. although i found one song i liked -- shakedown street, i think it's called.

"Shakedown Street" can definatly be flipped. I've messed around with that track a few times. If anyone wants to check out with some interesting improv Grateful Dead. find the
"Infared Roses" album. definatly good drums to sample. And some other cool sounds too
