I'm not entirely sure, but it fits somewhere in the Electronica/Chillout genre, with Hip Hop influences. When it was just me and my MP I was creating stuff a lot closer to Hip Hop though.

If you want to create obvious and interesting variations in your track start out with patterns, then maybe like Clint said, merge those patterns into a single sequence. There's no hard and fast rules mate, but my older stuff would have been way less interesting if I had tried to do it all in one sequence.

How do the legends of the MPC do it? I honestly don't know... :?

Are you using a DAW? I would say its MUCH easier to arrange a song on a DAW. If in the MPC, song mode then convert to seq is what i used to do. Came up with basic 4 bar beat, copy seq, then add a variation to it. Do it again. If sample based beat, freak the sample again to make a chorus. then the basics is down. i usually do something completely different for intros so i just a daw for that.
