Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500

That I thought I would share. Tried it on a 1000 and it doesn't work. Because it's a glitch in the 500, but it sounds good.

This is for the style of programming where you make a sequence out of different tracks and turn them off and on via mute track. It can be changed to fit other programming styles.

So you have a long sample chopped into (4,8,12,16,whatever) pieces, right?
On the same mute group, right?
And a track with chops being played at 16ths on timing correct. So the track is telling the MPC to trigger A1, A5, A1, A10, A1, A2, etc... on Timing Correct. You know, rearranging the chops or just playing them out in order to get a better control of the tempo and alignment of sounds. Standard stuff.

THEN

Make a track with a blank pad (no sample attached to the pad) on the same mute group as the chops. So that it works as an off button for your samples that are chopped; it stops the playback of them. Put timing correct on (for both tracks, sample and off button) and hold note repeat on 1/16ths with this blank pad and program it on a separate track.
When you turn this track on on playback, without turning off the sample track, it won't not make your sample play, but rather play the slightest, slightest sliver of it and then stop it.
I got some pianos to sound like the mouth-clicks from Snoop's Drop it like it's hot. I got a drum break to sound like bongos.
It's a nice variation to throw in there on a beat because everything else you programmed stays, and the slivers are going to fit in the beat because they're in the same key as the sample you built the beat around or whatever.

It's really just a glitch with the 500 but it sounds cool.

I'll upload a sample or two of it if someone wants to hear what I'm talking about.

This is the type of topics I want to see around here!

Dope idea  ssnedden, I'm gonna try that when I get off work.

Examples:

DivShare File - Con Goes.mp3

DivShare File - Cliques.mp3

The first one builds up.
First just a sample that isn't on mute groups or related to this trick.
Then a drumbreak that is being muted with this trick, and instead sounds like congos or something.
Then a kick layered
Then the drumbreak gets unmuted.

So you can hear the drums as they're sequenced, and how they sound muted in comparison.

___________________________________________________________________

The second one starts with the sample and gets muted after 8 bars. The clicks are the piano/main sample being muted.

That's by far the best sounding BUG I've ever heard...! Nice find

Does it make sense to anyone why it plays back this way? The only thing I can come up with is that the MPC is far from sample-accurate, but that should leave a much smaller bit of the sample playing...

I don't have a camera.

Here's as basic as I can get:

Track 1:
Drums

Track 2:
Bassline

Track 3:
A sample chopped into 1/16ths, all pads of the chops are on Mute Group 1, sequenced in with timing correct on at 1/16ths.

Track 4:
A pad with NO SAMPLE assigned to Mute Group 1, with Timing Correct putting it at every 1/16th note.

When you unmute track 4, the 'glitch' happens and it makes track 3 sound like the congos on the 'Con Goes' beat or the clicks at the end of the 'Cliques' beat, or presumably a bunch of other possibilities.

Hope that makes more sense.

Yo, I got another trick. This one probably isn't specific to the 500 but I have yet to run across anyone suggesting it.

Did you know if you apply Master EQ and/or Compression AND THEN sample in record mode it is on while you're recording?

So it's:

Another layer of EQ for your sample source to pass through.

Real-Time Compression (although be careful because it will amplify the noise floor if no sound is being played, and you end up with the computery-500 staticy noise)

An easy way of applying EQ or Compression to ONE (or however many) sample without using up effects slots. Simply turn on Master effects before sampling a sound and turn it off afterwards for other samples/change the settings for the master mix/etc...

In short...If you sample with Master effects on, it puts them on your samples. Master EQ and Compression can be added to the sample while you are sampling.

Use it to your advantage. And be aware of it so you can turn it off when you don't want it on your samples.

Let's use this thread to share 500 tips and stuff. It will help take away from all of the other lame shit that has been going on around here.

^ You mean only while RE-sampling the outputs, correct?

I would be surprised if the master effects alter samples being recorded by the line inputs...

No, it is affected when sampling, not resampling.

Try it.

Run your TT through your MPC, listen to something from a record. Then rewind it, turn on EQ or Compression in the master screen and listen to it again. It picks up those effects real time.

Well, the master effects do affect all sound going out the outputs... this includes any sounds that you're "monitoring" while in record mode.

What you just described doesn't actually confirm that the effects are recorded into the resulting samples... (I don't have my MP in front of me)
