Rough'n'Ready, what I call the var-swing quantize, has probably been covered on the forum, I don't read up on stuff unless I have a problem arise (or I'm deprived of sleep for too long)

Vari-swing just means that after tapping in your beat, for example a Kick on pad A01,Hat on A07 and a clap on A05. stop play back and press F1 [TC] in the main screen.
Tap the pad that played the Hat sound on, you will see the Note:ALL change to NOTE: A07
Set the swing amount to say...54%...press do it.

if you aren't satisfied, press UndoSeq button and try another setting.

Now go into [TC] gain and quantize another sound, using a different swing setting.

A combination of swing settings and un-quantized playing usually works to make a less rigid, but still tight rythm.
I also use this method when layering pads, although layered Kick drums can get a little messy.. Snaps ,claps and snares layer very well using this technique.

If you want to get freaky you can also adjust the Time: field in [TC] to quantize even more individualy..like just the first clap or what ever, but if you wnat to spend that much time editing , I recamend loading the midi file into a computer sequencer and getting a bit mouse-y with it.

I want to point out first that I am in no way trying to "take credit" for someone else's previous postings concerning this method. ( i know how touchy some of the mofo's on this forum are about who- said what first and I don't want to " feal the wrath" from probably 3k)

i use a korg msx1 as midiclock master and think (?) its better then the internal clock. not sure though. and...

not exatly the same topic but has anybody tried making a very short hihat? take a longer sample with "note on" and hit the pad short. more for a click sounding hihat. copy that several times and then listen. it sound different all the time......? not to mention the random muting of longer pad samples from a earlier thread. the sound engine seems very beta to me and is realy unusable for, say a live act.
but only few people here seem to care what the babympc sounds like, rather then what it looks like. i think i accidently bought a fisherprice toy.

I agree with you RECMENT.
The envelopes are not always exactly the same for some reason (i had that on my MPC2000 too).
But the clock is not very tight. I'm not talking about it having a nice swing or not, i just want 16th hihats to be straight 16 not to be slightly out of beat every few seconds. I have many drum machines (some of them 20 years old) and most of them have no problem at all with a basic thing like that.
I hope they are going to tighten the clock/timing in a future update but i'm afraid it's a hardware/system thing that can't be improved...

well cowbell, i guess most people here make different music then we do. speaking of 16th hihats, 'no what i meen bro? :) and i aint no hardware expert, but i think the occasional muting of long samples when fidling around meens that the ram handling is to slow. and if so, that can't be fixed in a update....

You guys.....it's just buyer's remorse....admit it.

MPC1000. Timing sounds tight to me, don't forget the MPC1000 sequencer resolution is 96ppq- IIRC the other MPC's have higher resolution sequencers. Do you understand this?

Let's face it. The MPC1000 is just an expensive toy.

You wouldn't be attempting to rile people up, would you? :o

well maybe i am overreacting... and i guess if you use the mpc as a drumcomputer you don't even notice occasional dropouts. but i use other drummachines and wanted the mpc because of its large ram, so i can trigger long pad sounds that go over 8 bars. and every few minutes they just drop out, silence till the next passage. and i wonder why only 3 out of 100 people here seem to bother about this major bug, allong others. and the rest is conserned about looks and colors.

oooh, nice point! but unfair... pretty much everything to do with the 1K gets covered by the regulars here. You seem pretty new, so maybe you should check the thousasnds of posts covering glitches, problems, etc etc etc.

personally I think you are right tho, i use my 1K in a similar way to you for some of what I do and i also get drops outs, but it's usually when a lot of stuff is going on so i put it down to note stealing (only 32 note polyphony, remember) - it has happened so infrequently that i can't hold it against a machine that has helped breathe new life into my way of working...

now, what colour should i paint the rubber pads on the bottom?

ok, but i have read lot of the previous topics about these glitches. and thats why i got upset, because most mpc users always have an explanation for every failure of the machine. like akai was a religion and everything they do is ok. i think they where once state of the art 10 years ago and became the microsoft of musicgear business.
but don't get me wrong, i wanted exactly this machine for the reasons mentioned above and i am actualy very happy with it. exept for the bugs and the explenation that they are a feature. when i use few long samples i surely never reach the 32 note polyphony.
and that akai does have a problem gets obvious when looking at the 4k forum. it took them two years to make an os that works like it should. and the 4k users seem more critical. anyway, i'll shut up now and wait for an update. happy music making

I think there is something wrong with the timing also. There are things I play that no matter what tc setting I use including off, my 1k wont get right. Also, somethimes a pad hit will register at velocity 1. I never noticed this before updating from 1.01 to 1.04. It's very anoying but I can fix it with step edit. Maybe it has something to do with having one of the mpc's that don't sit flat.

I think it might be a lil off too. I was trying to make a beat and it just didn't swing or feel right.
