Final Decision-- I'm abandoning 2XL

Practically all my samples run through both filters (HPF + LPF) because:

a) Many samples, especially from vinyl, may benefit from a slight clean up in the lower frequencies. No need to have a lot of rumble, sonic or subsonic, stacking up.

b) To get the sound I want.

c) To make place for all elements in the mix. Better seperation in terms of frequency as well as depth control can be achieved by serial filtering.

I hardly ever use the filters as an effect and the sound of resonance is almost without an exception plain nasty in my ears.

I was using the filters the same way as Ryssen, which I suspect is the typical use. An HP filter, and LP filter in serial to non-destructively shape a sound.

What I'm planning to do in OS2 with only 1 filter is this-- Since I almost never use the insert effects, I have two seperate EQ's available. An adjusted EQ in conjunction with the filter should probably be an IMPROVEMENT in the sound I'm getting straight out of the MP, now that I think about it. Using the two filters for this was kind of a quick fix.

Anyone here effectively use the EQ insert effects?

i haven't really used XL much i'm still working on alot of os2 projects, is it not possible to write a ya drums and then select what sounds n pads ya want simult afterwards n get them down with overdub? So you have everything where ya want before you turn on sim pad? Does the simult pad still work?

Simult pad does work in 2XL, but would not in the way that you described. It's a pretty feeble knock-off of what simult pad used to be, honestly. Search this forum, there were a few good threads recently...

personally just want the bugs gone before moving on....but it's starting to feel like it's just gonna be more bells and whistles added on without addressing the issue of bugs. it say akai PROFESSIONAL on the box. means people use this machine PROFESSIONALLY, meaning they make they money with it. so just fix the damn bugs b4 addin new stuff..

anybody rememeber that episode of the simpsons where homer goes and works for his brother, and gets into automobile design? he developed 'the homer' ....

haha, sent his brothers business broke!. At the moment in osx the bugs and freezes are becoming annoying, there is one where pattern view which just locks up the entire screen. Don't get me wrong I respect Mr JJ for what he has achieved, but it seems he's just chasing his tail with bugs atm.

I'm finding Pattern View to be like the unwanted stepchild of the JJ OS... so much potential, but somewhat neglected.

I haven't had it lock up on my recently, but pattern view DOES like to erase my note data if it's not to its liking. Try bring sequence data with triplets into pattern... it erases my notes out the sequence!

I'm really digging OS2XL so far. Actually OS2 is missing some of the features that are useful to me which are included in OS2XL, such as track velocity and the much welcome L-EQ and H-EQ filters and bringing back Filter 2 is definitely a plus. These definitely allow samples to sit better in the mix within the MPC and reduces the need to use the MPC's sub outputs and occupy extra channels on a mixer. When the LPF or HPF doesn't do it to my liking, the LEQ and HEQ will. The chord, arpeggio, and pad to track are also very welcome features.

On the other hand, incompatibility with OS2 and OS1 programs and sequences are drawbacks rather than welcome features. However, I consider that minor stuff and I can live with that. I'll just create all new stuff in OS2XL and let the old stuff stay with OS1, finish it up in OS1, then move away from OS1.

If JJ fixes the note repeat bug in OS2XL (it also effects OS2) without creating additional bugs, then I'll be totally satisfied.

I agree, OS2 may be the stronger for some people. However, I don't really use/need the mix automation features and I find that OS2XL suits my needs better in terms of sample/MIDI mix features whereas others find OS2 suits theirs needs better because of the mix automation and advanced q-link features. That's why it's great that JJ made these two different OS versions to accommodate all of our needs since they couldn't cram all of the features into one OS as a result of memory constraints.

Honestly, OS2 should at least have Strength (Timing Correct), Pad event move to other track & Improved GPE. I personally would like to see it have Level of Normalize, Crossfade loop. XL is nice but it obviously ain't for everyone.

Installed latest OSX 1.12, you can now drag midi notes more than one tick at a time as in grid edit (this is how OS2 worked) was not aware of this from the bug fixes. Anyone else digging the audio tracks, good how the sample does not have to be triggered from the note on position

What would really be nice is if Akai "Pro" would sell their products with an operating system that is really useful and functional to begin with. If anyone wants to be honest there is no reason why we should have to spend another $98 for 2 upgrades to get an operating system that really works. What other company is out there that this is such a necessity or the product is almost useless? It's sad when a potential new MPC user has to be told to make sure they spend the extra money to upgrade to an operating system that should be included when they buy the product.

I have been saying this for months but others will say "what is an extra $100 when you already paid $1700. To me that is a big cop out and if this Kat really worked for Akai then they should have had this prior to him releasing all these versions.. Come on really how many more MPC's would have been sold if these added options came out of the box with all the upgrades to come.

Now this is when Akai could have been charging for upgrades because then there MPC OS would have been fire..... I am in the process of buying the OS tho because I have owned 3 different Models of MPC's and the OS on all sux really. The features out way the money but it would have been great to see a release that counters JJOS upgrades.

To me this is beyond bad marketing on akai and shows they do not have the rigt staff working on there Flag ship seller..
