I recently got a firewire drive for PT LE, I put the Software on my Mac G5.
I had to Partition the FW to format it to OS X, I just partitioned it as one drive.
I use it to do all the work on, and for transport of stuff between Home and the Studio at work.
That's How I did it.

Install protools on your internal hd and use the firewire to record your tracks...easy. Whenever you start a new session just select your firewire drive to record to.

If its only one drive then its not a partition.

Yeah, That's what I had to do to format the Firewire HD.
I guess that's what Mac OSX asks for in order to format.
