the only thing i can say is drivesavers. that happened to me and my harddrive was formatted. I got all of my info back for a big price. $800 bucks. It depends on what the tracks are worth to you. I had to tracks I was selling for 20 stacks so 800 was nothing.

AKAISYS is a friggin mess because it fvcks up your HD, and its impossible to back your stuff up to your pc because it hangs up everytime you trie.  :x   :x :( :?

You know what really Sucks? Is that why can we not connect a USB Drive our MPC4000 and Back up the Whole internal drive with the press of one button!!! Like in the new OS we have audition button...I think a Back up button would be great....You press Back up then it takes to the screen where you select the Drive you want to back up then where you want to save it....Quick, Easy and Lifesaving/....I lost my HD back in Oct 03 and was furious.....luckily I had backed it all up to CD's...Whew!!!

That will only work when all the bugs are out of AKAISYS, because the USB connection gets lost, to much.

great one cosa nostra, ... this or somethin similar backing up-wise should really be one of the next things akai should look into imo! maybe also a drag and drop via aksys from hd to internal cdrw or whateva would be helpful!!! i still have gbytes to backup and my pc is old and shit - my entire hd space there is not even half the size of my data in the 4k!!! so i always ask myself: damn, do i really have to buy a new pc to feel save on the 4k!!! ... can't be the way to go for akai imo! ... for the users, well looks as we have to ...

and mohammed: i feel sorry to hear that! ... and condolences and good luck at the same time is all i can say!

how do you guys back up your things? here only finished songs and some xtranice samples and programs get saved onto cd! i know its qiite superficially but i simply don't have the nerve to save every session twice: once onto internal hd and once onto cdrw - coz even though my cdrw should burn some superfast 52x it takes for ages!

... damn i really feel unsave now! mohammed, which os were you currently usin? one of the betas???

i never had a problem with usb connection getting lost using the mpc4k for 2 months now.
i did encouter lot of problem using usb gear on different pc. looking in your usb system driver, or maybe installing a high quality pci card with usb connections could do the trick. it think these problems can also be related to what kind of chip is on the usb controller. i use an asus k8v deluxe motherboard and the usb never fails on me. On my cheap laptop though i have similar problems you describe.
Also do you use an usb audio card? usb bandwidth is shared between different ports.

My drive crashed 2 days ago. I'm starting to believe that the deskstar drives that are installed in the 4k are frankly garbage. My tech told me that I was the fourth person he knew that had a deskstar fail. I feel your pain, brother.

Sorry to hear this Mohammed.

Actually IBM Deskstar is famous for failing. Check http://arstechnica.com/news/posts/20011022-2591.html for more info for instance. IBM doesnt manufacture hd's no more, they sold that part to hitachi. I bought an Seagate for my mpc and stayed far away from the ibm drives.

I agree that its a pain to backup the mpc4000... Theres something about the USB connection thats simply notworking as it should and akai really need to look into it. Only advice one can give at this moment is to not give up when backing up, if it hangs redo do it until it works, or send small parts at a time to make sure it doesnt hang.
