New to the whole MPC game.....

Okay so i have been messing with my mpc 1k with the jj os for a few weeks now, yet i am so lost. I am in search of direction! I went out and got a laptop, and a midi controller (m audio keystation 88es) and i am literally stuck. i dont know how to get sounds into the mpc. all i really know how to do is record stuff to sample, and trim and chop it (somewhat on the chopping). So as of now i have a few questions that can directly be answered to start off.

1. What pieces am i missing?

2. Where can i find something or someone to take me under their wing and help me through this process?


This is what i already have established.

1. i want to make beats like dilla, illa j, black milk, kanye, and maybe even stuff like ryan leslie. stuff like that, the list is longer i just dont have them running thru my head.

2. i have basic musical theory as i played saxaphone for 7 years, and i am a recording artist today.

3. i have a couple hundred dollars i could drop, but if i didnt need to right now, thats always good!

any help yall could give me would be great! if u have things i can answer to make the process easier that would be great also!

you just sample from any medium. you dont really need the midi controller inless you have a rack with sounds. just find mediums to sample from. most common are turntables. you can use anything tho, vhs, tape, dvd, microphone, anything that has sound. a cd player, an ipod ectg ect

you know how to sample -- that 's how you get sounds in.
you can also use the usb cable to drag wav files to/from your computer to the mpc. details are in the manual.

what else do you need? probably a tunrtable to sample from, a pile or records, and a dj mixer/turntable preamp. you don't need a technics 1200 if you're only sampling and not djing.

you'll also need monitors to listen to the mpc.

I am looking for someone to teach me how to use Mpc too. Is there anywhere they teach how to use this product or someone in this board who willing to. Like giving lesson or something. I'm fine with paying as long as its not too expensive. I'm in london btw.

yes you need a motif right now. other wise you cannot do any beats at all

there are many, may,many other options besides a motif rack bro.

dont think you need this or that just cus you see certain producer with that piece of gear in their studio.


hmmm what else.. if you really want an example of sampling

just grab any song by any of those producers you mentioned and look up what they sampled, listen to the sample and well you know the rest. i dont even gotta say it

all the yancey boys beats are from the late 90's ,but the whole reason i bought the album!! that "to do" beat with the trumpet is crazy.anyway..i also do soul type beats and the best i can say is choose good records and dont buy drum sounds! get drums from vinyl ...even if you cant find em at first, for starters you could even use very common (dusty fingers,strictly breaks,ect.) just chop all te individual drum hits ,name em and save to a program on the mp..experiment und.....turn it up! lol

u could just sample the (example) piano.. and chop it up and assign it to which ever pad u want.. and u could just use the notes from the pads.. thats what i do

Have you checked out that "Beat Making on the MPC1000" tutorial? Check out the AD in the right sidebar ---->

That's what I did when I got into the MPC. Before I got it, I knew about music, but I didn't know how to control/manipulate the MPC. Then after I got that tutorial, and spend about 6 or 8 weeks going through it step-by-step (it's pretty comprehensive) I'm now totally comfortable with the MPC. Seriously, I just sit in front of it and get to it--I don't even have to think about how to do things anymore, it's all just natural to me now.

The manual ain't setup to teach you how to actually use the MPC; the tutorial is.

I recommend it.
