Just weighed it all up. The price that the 2500 is too much imo for someone that is just getting into the world of the MPC. If I end up feeling that my xl isn't right for me, then i'll sell it and get a 2500. But for now the xl will do me fine. In some ways because the xl doesn't have all the features of the 2500, you have to think about it more and be more creative in what you do.This can be good thing, thinking outside of the picture and doing something else to create that thing you want to add/do. Just my 2cents.

I had this same decision when picking an MPC.

I picked the 2kxl for a couple reasons.

Number one reason was the feel of the pads.

Also I dont need all those internal effects, imo the 2500 is too much. I can just do all that extra stuff out of the box on the computer in the final mixdown.

Also reasons that jazzy stated.

That's cool. Ofcourse you can mess with 2xl and never mind all the other additional features on 25k. But even if 25k is a bit more expensive, it might be a better investment at the end..plus with JJ OS its more appealing than any other machine, according to those who owned it. So I gues at this stage if the deal is, as I originally stated, if you can get a 2xl and 25k for almost the same price, rational choice would be to cop the mpc 2500. Even if its a first mpc. Anybody disagree?

why going a long way round when youll end up with the 2500?

learning the xl, getting rid of it, learning the 2500..does not sound logical to my ears..

Agreed then. I'd say this debate might be closed.
The xl is great mpc, but 2500 is more worthed.
Thanks for all opinions. peace

2000xl its a great machine, classic. but like someone have already said, SUPPORT its a big factor that needs to affect your decision.
If it's your first mpc i would strictly recommend you a 1k with a pad replacement and jj os.

why?

with the mpc 1000 you can do exactly the same that in the 2500 , whats the difference:

1. -700 DLLS
2. DIFFERENT LCD SCREEN
3. 2 MORE KNOBS
4. 4 MORE OUTPUTS
5. CD ROM EXPANSION

in my opinion this factors doesnt worth 700 DLLS.
even though, theyr all MPC'S so they are great machines :)

I am also tossing up between the two. It will be my 1st MPC and i am a drummer so pad hitting/performance is the funtion i am looking for most. I would love to make beats similar to Dj shadow and aphex twin but i aslo like daft punk justice sounds too.
So basically sound wise and playabilty what would be my best bet?

It depends on the type of environment you work in aswel.
If you are looking for an all in one box, I would recommend the 2500.
If you have access to outboard equipment and you won't use most of the fx and so on the 2500 I would take the 2000xl.

Soundwise, I prefer the converters on the 2000 xl more... i tested the 2 machines ones and found that the 2500 is cleaner sounding with a wider stereo field, but lacking a bit charachter (colouration).
Something that I think the 2000 xl does better, although it can be a taste thing.

But on the other hand the 2500 has Balanced outputs and the 2000 xl doesn't, this will give you a higher noise level. (although easy workaround is a DI box)

I personally like the 2000 xl more, because it feels and sounds better to me.
Also the fact that it doesn't have a lot of fancy options appeals to me.

The MPC was fabricated to be a stable sequencer, with a drum sampler engine.
People found out that this machine can be used in a creative way to create certain types of music, which I think wouldn't be possible if it didn't have limitations.
Limitations make you think in a creative way...

And I think that more features doesn't mean you will get a better machine.

I personally think that I and most people who use MPC's wouldn't be as exited about MPC's if the 2500 would be the first MPC that was made...

The vibe feel and sound are far more important to me than a few extra features. But that's me.

I would get a 2000 XL and call it a day, that's my opinion..

^ Same reason why I would not choose to mix in the box with all the plugins created by mankind compaired to a SSL desk or Neve with some descent outboard gear. it wouldn't FEEL right

Very very very good points on all responses, especially Marek2kxl. Thanks for the detailed info.

If anything, the way I look at is, if you've never had a girlfriend, and this one girl comes by...she may not have huge tits, but damn, she can suck the chrome off a pinball and she's hot, classicly hot. You play her for a long time, have a damn great time, but then maybe decide to check out this other girl around the way. She kinda has a different personality, but you can adjust pretty quick 'cause there are similarities from the last chick. But this one, she's got a nice ass, rack, great with hummers and handjobs (with both hands), is bi-sexual, and she's got a serious brain. You can talk to her about anything and you're on the same page. More than anything, is she starts to get outta line, you can reset her mindset and make her better. But damn, the flat chick will swallow.

In any case, it's an upgrade and you're stoked again. I'll eventually have both.

Damn, had some purple a little while ago. Look at me go.

I'm sure 2500 has the same sound, even many people are arguing that it doesn't.

NOPE.

Get the XL.

The 2500 is dope, but not as dope.

But like the guys said, If its going to be your only piece of gear, and you don't have any outboard gear, the 2500 is better.

Only issue I see for getting an xl now is you can't find any lcd screens. Mind you if there was a place making new screens again, then the xl would win. Without that though, the second the lcd dies your xl's worthless essentially.

In other words...somebody makes some screens damn it!

plain and simple, the 2500 has a much much much more powerful, capable sequencer than the 2000. you can't reasonably do the stuff on the 2000 that you can do on the 2500.

If you can afford the MPC 2500 (which just had a US price drop)..there is no question that it is the machine to get...whether you use the Akai or unofficial JJ OS. The 2K and 2KXL are great machines, but they have been significantly improved upon with the 2500.
