SP-12 Turbo with MPC 60 and ASR 10/88

would this be the ultimate analog setup? minus the sp1200?

This is what I"m thinking would make me happy, that and a Joe Meek mic pre and I'd be set for years.

Opinions?

can anyone tell me about the SP-12 and what it can't do compared to the 1200 and better yet, what it could do for the MPC 60 that the 60 couldn't do alone.

if you haven't been keeping up, I just got scammed on my MPC 1000 and I think it's the analog gods way of telling me to go with the 60 and it's dusty companions.

No, because all of the equipment you described is digital. For analog, think Arp, Moog, etc... The SP-12 does have analog filters tho. Das about it. Having digital to analog converters does not an analog piece of gear make. If it did, Fruity Loops would be considered analog becuase my soundcard has em.

The combo you described is a good one tho. You might be better served swapping the SP-12 out for an Emax HD SE Rack. All of your devices would then be SCSI capable, and the sound would be akin to the SP. The SP sounds different from the 60. It has a punchy mid boost and to my ears the drums sound heavier or thicker. The 60 has an excellent interface and sequencer.

How can you get scammed on a MPC 1000? They are brand new and AmericanMusical.com charges your credit/debit card in installments instead of having you pay all at once. Used maybe?

SPs have a different sequencer than MPCs as well. Not better or worse, just different. I plan on getting an SP-12 maybe next year.

ive never heard somone using the EMAX shit as a replacment for an SP..
is it close (in sound) ?

now that i got an mpc3k,
the thought of trading my 60 + some cash for an sp1200 has crossed my mind..

although my 60II is beautiful and i would be sad to see it go..

It will be your loss.....lol. I have an Emax HD SE....Elmacaco has one as well. 12 bit w/real analog filters, SCSI, keyboard or rackmount. No pad limit on sample time like the SP's. Easy to lay your samples out over the keys for basslines and such. It has a selectable samplerate sounds thick and yummy on drums, similar to the SP and most of all SCSI. (read no floppies dammit). Get the 12 bit EMU sound and drastically reduce your song/sample load time. Its a no brainer. The Emax formats a zip disk in a matter of mere seconds. Much quicker than the 60.

LOL word. Not many have. Im not even sure I should be divulging the info actually. I wouldnt say its a replacement for the SP because it has no sequencer. Having the 60 I would never use the sequencer anyway. Its a perfect addition to my setup. YMMV. (Your Milage May Vary)

Thats cuz the Emax is a boy and the MPC is a girl.

Emax dont have to be sexy. Its a roughneck....lol. The MPC is the only girl I know with 16 titties tho. Thats gangsta.... 8)

On the real tho....the Keyboard version may be ugly....but the rack looks like any other old rackmount sampler. The SP-1200 is way uglier than the 60 to me. The Emax and SP are more beast than beauty....and im cool with that.

what you talking about the Emulator II came before the Emax and has a more rugged sound, it is literlally the SP12 on a keyboard.

Either one is dope. But I'd shoot for the Emulator II, I got one.

Oh and the Detail, the emax comes in like 4 versions, but if you already got an MPC just cop the rackmount version.

Its all in what you prefer.

I prefer zip disks over floppies. I prefer the interface and control in the Emax. I made a choice. If I was gonna compromise and not get the SP 12/1200..... It better be worth it. The ability to boot off a hard drive instead of floppy and use zip disks/Smart Media Ram Cards/CD's is worth it to me.

The Emulator II has a sampling rate of 27,777kHz and uses 8-bit samples which are replayed at 14-bit resolution.

It literally is not. Actually if you listen....all three have their own distinct qualities. The EII is a big BEAST. It would be cool have one just to scare girls when they come to the spot. Id probably only use it for sound design if at all tho. The HD version would be the best for me cuz I dont like loading the OS from floppy.

Like you said tho either is dope. Going back to the original post tho.... the ASR 10 is that joint. Dont sleep on the ASR-X either.... its an hugely underrated device. If I bought another keyboard tho it would probably be the Roland Fantom S.

So I'm going to get an MPC 60 first version with all the upgrades once one comes along that I can't do without...what's my next step. what do I start looking for to compliment the 60 and the short sample time etc. ASR, SP12/1200, EMax...?

I've already got the recording part of my studio setup minus a decent mic pre, rocking a blue tube right now. As far as production though, it's all been drum loops and samples so far.
