S950 floppy drive(pictures inside)

vst charged me $150 for an mpc60 floppy drive a few years back... labor not included...

Thanks man. I already mailed VST. I'm going to order one this week. It's really a rip off. I even have to pay $27 shipping costs to holland. This thing is going to cost me even more then my 950.
But for me it's still worth the investment for my dedicated sampler.

p.s. Will it be usful for anyone if I post the pics on how to remove/ replace the s950's floppydrive?

Allright, here the pics and a quik instruction on how to remove the s950's floppydisk drive.

First u have to unscrew all the screws on the sidpanels to remove the outer casing. Don't forget there's one screw at the back of the 950.



After that u have to remove the frontpanel. There are three screws at top:



and there are three screws at the botom u have to remove.



Now that u have removed the frontpanel (don't forget the volume knobs) u can easily unscrew the screws that are holding the powerbutton and the cable that's attached to it.



Also remove this thing



that's blocking ur way to one of our biggest nightmare: the broken floppydrive, by unscrewing these four screws:



Now u can unplug the diskdrive's powercable



and data cable



Make sure the powerswitch and cable are out of the way



Unscrew the screws that are holding the diskmount on it's place at the botom of ur 950



Now u can just take it out, and remove the disk from it's diskmount.

I actually worked around the SP floppy with a method never seen elsewhere. Not DX, google whatever. Check my threads' list. After you read that, you can eat your words fo' sho. Word.

PS As far as the 950 floppy, I am too bothered for it. But I am pretty sure I will work around that too. I've done it on the 60, SP, ASR and s3200.

can u fit an internal CF in the 950? seems like theres room w/floppy

yes but as far as floppy mods go there must be a way to do that on a s950 too. I've read many things about floppy mods. Ok none of the websites are about the s950. They are often about Amiga drives but I dont belive that the s950 drive is soooooooo special. Its an ALPS DFP723D14B drive and I just cant belive that this model is the only one that work with the s950. The special thing about the s950 is the disk format. It uses 80 tracks / 2 sides / 10 sectors per track / 1024 byte per sector. thats 1600kbytes instead of the MS DOS formatted 1440kbytes. But that could not be the problem of the drive cause my PC drive (WinXP) could read and write this format too (of course I use the special OmniFlop floppydriver).


@Duke: Maybe thats possible too. There was a guy in another thread who talked about some friends and their work on a floppy emulator. I've seen some youtube videos of floppy emulators for the Amiga so who knows. Some mad nerd will do this blindfold. I think the main problem is that there are not so many nerds that are interested in old samplers.

You can somewhat do it if you have the IB board and turn it inwards. However, this requires some engineering skills and plus I don't think you will make it to the front as there quite some stuff fitted in there, besides the two huge MoBo's.

I never said I did it. All I said was that it is more likely to find a replacement for a HD drive, than for a DD. However, I am pretty damn sure that if I give it a try, I will somehow find a solution even if it takes me more than a year of research. And this solution will cost less than just buying a replacement from the known websites.

^^what about trying this You could be a hero to all the s950 users. Time is runnin and the potential usable drives went to the junkyard everyday cause people think floppy drives are outdated.

Can't you just use a 235HF? If you''re new to the 950 you don't really need the HD support.

You're giving me a challenge here and I got projects running on the 950. But I'll see what I can do.

First of all, we all need to check our already installed floppy drives and make a list of all the manufacturers/revisions we can find installed, while 100% working. That way we will all be able to tell which drives ACTUALLY work.

I am telling this cause when I was fixing my 60, I ended up collecting 5 different revisions of the FD which *supposedly* worked, based on various info I collected from various places around.

My floppydrive finally arrived from VST.
It's a TEAC FD-235HF A59

There was something intresting written on the package:
S-1000
S-950

So I guess they both have the same floppydrives?

I tryed, but I couldn't open it up without any force. It was to risky for me. Weird thing is that there are no screws that holds the covers on their place. Looks like they did something special preventing people to open it up to find out the secret.
