Hi chaps,

Thanks for the renewed interest in Hollow Sun. :D

Now that the MPC5000 can read S5/6000 format sounds in V2.00, I hope to support it with the occasional freebie as time allows.

In fact, I have resurrected some old downloads, the links for which kind of fell apart when I changed my website hosting not so long ago. You can see the new links here:

http://www.hollowsun.com/downloads/index_s56.html

You will find some belting Oberheim synth sounds but I have also added some rather unusual Buddhist instruments. I have to be straight with you and say that they've not been tested on my MPC5000 because I've not had time to do the V2.00 update yet (can you believe?!!!). No - seriously - been too busy :?

But if V2.00 is seamlessly reading S5k stuff as I am told it is, they should work (though you may/will want to roll your sleeves up and tweak 'em to your own requirements).

A small note about any freebies I'll be doing...

I won't be doing anything in the way of hip-hop stuff. For two reasons - I don't speak hip-hop and there are people who do it a lot better than I could ever pretend to! Three reasons - you lot can do all that yourselves anyway!

Instead, I hope to bring you stuff that you might not normally consider, stuff that might take you in interesting directions.

Also, it must be remembered that just because it's an MPC, it doesn't mean that it's limited to hip-hop (the MPC5000 perhaps more than any MPC) so I'll be catering for those people who are dabbling in other genres with their MPC5Ks.

And finally...

The old collection of freebies will not be being resurrected for a whole raft of reasons. But I may be able to provide some snippets here and there.

So bookmark the page and keep your eyes peeled for new additions.

And enjoy your MPC5000s!

Hollowsun, Thanks a million... we called upon you last week, and you quickly responded and also helped out... We will definitely be testing out the sounds. By the way, you should know that hip hop is a form of music that has no limitations... Real producers like to invent new methods in hip hop and other music... also I didnt know you had a MPC 5000. I guess you learn something new everyday, talk to you soon

Thank you so much, Hollow!

My roots are oldschool electronics of the 70s and 80s, so I feel very well with your selection of pristine sounds...
The MPC 5000 has so many functions and capabilities that you don't have to be tied to a special style of music with it.

Thanks for the download link to your site! I think sounds you provide are great no matter what genre! Is that Nebula pack 5K compatible?

Errrmmm... yes and no!

Yes in that they would load and no in that many of them use positional crossfade between keygroups (i.e. the keygroups overlap with a crossfade to make the transition between them smoother) and MPC5k doesn't support that. However, I've checked a few out and they sound fine without the positional crossfade - they just sound better with it in the S5000. But they're certainly not unusable in the MPC5kV2.

Alright, thanks!

OK, going back to the synth engine.
I've made a few programs recently, and found some issues:
the mpc5k is sometimes very slow to update the sound when I tweak parameters, although no sequence or FX is in use
Copy a program with a name, and the copy will be named program + the first empty number in internal memory example "program 02" I would prefer that it kept the original name and added a number or "copy" to it.
In the VCO page, the LFO >VCO1 modulation has a way too high modulation depth at it's lowest level (1). that has to be a software bug.
The velocity>cutoff should be replaced by vel>Env1 cutoff depth like in classic 80's synths.
Env1>PWM should be an option to LFO, to mimic the way synths like juno6, jupiter6/8, SH101, , Matrix6/12/1000 do it.
key> envel.time and vel>envel.time were also very commonly used back then.
I agree that a second LFO would be useful for more complex modulations.
the total envelope time should also be much longer
The basic synth emulation is still great, it just needs some adjustments here n' there ;-)

Great suggestions, jocks! I like the simple but effective routings of classic 80s synths very much.
