How to get basslines from samples

I really want to learn the art of sampling from records and I dont know how to isolate basslines from samples (how/what to filter out and what-not). If somebody could explain it to me, that would be great.

u need to filter out the highs so u just get the bass part outta a sample. think of treble and bass. like u want to filter all the treble out so u have a raw bass line. its good for when say u hear a bass in a busy part say wit the drums and melody goin all at once. so u can just extract the bassist's groove.

Unless the original source is pretty much just a solo bass, you are not going to be able to isolate a bassline perfectly, as if you had the original multitrack master tape & could just play the track with the bass on its own. You can make it more prominent though.
Imagine you are sampling a riff that is drums, upright bass & piano.
Sweeping your eq or a low pass filter to cut the treble off you would first lose any hi hats & cymbals from the drums. Next would be the higher range of the piano but by the time you've got rid of the lower range of the piano you would also have lost some of the finger clicks in the bassline. Plus, don't forget you've still got the drums there although they will have lost a bit of their sparkle too.
You can then try cutting off the very bottom end which might remove the thud of the kick drum...... but you might end up losing everything. Just experiment with whatever filters & eq you have.
