I own an MPC1000 with the free JJ OS 3.08 which I like but I'd like to max it out some time soon with the full JJ OS, replacement pads, hard drive, blue screen, etc. I've played with the MPC5000 a while ago and I really liked it even though it was before OS 2.0. I'm just wondering what the advantages of having one over the other are.

You have read the spec sheets haven't you? I believe it is still accessible at http://www.akaipro.com/contentmgr/showdetails.php/id/2644 if you are so inclined to read up on it. You state you own a 1k already and have used the 5k.

The 1k with JJOS has a fairly comparable feature set to the 5k. The 1k is more portable than the 5k. The 1k has been out longer and has more docs and users behind it.

The 5k has more output options. The 5k has more input options. The 5k has more memory. The 5k can be upgraded to larger hard drive storage. The 5k has the option for a cd/dvd drive. The 5k has an intergrated synth.

What do you want to know? Which one is better? I don't think anybody on the 1k or 5k forums are going to tell you which one you should own. There is probably some merit in owning both for yourself so you can decide. You've already got the experience with the 1k and the interest in the 5k. If you find a good deal on the 5k the resale of it if you hate it probably won't cripple you financially, and the resale of your 1k you're going to take a hit anyways.

Good luck man... let us know what *you* think.

typical mpc user mentality resolution: quantized 16th notes.

you posted up a track awhile back. with 808 drums. it was real basic but bomb regardless. did you use quantize on those drums?

was it this one? this one didn't feel too basic when i was making it, but i can hear where you're coming from. there's some flutter around the gills with the quieter drums/rides but the hard hitting drum pattern is very straightforward.

hard to believe that this one was already almost a year ago

almost forgot - i actually do not remember whether or not i quantized the drums. they're not perfectly on, but the timing of the whole track is pretty tight (again except for some of those fluttering quieter drums) especially the lead sample, which is RIGIDLY quantized.

i would say having never used the 5k mind you. stick with the 1k get the jjos full, buy a blue screen, then if you need a synth take whats left over and get yourself a decent synth. tada!
