opened my used mpc, is this water damage/smoke?

so i bought this used thru guitar center ($450). i put my ram in and tested all the buttons and everything works. they shipped it to my house (cuz it was at another store location) and when i opened it i smelled dirt ball all over it. this dude musta just been a sticky guy cuz it was just obviously pretty used. i don't mind tho.. i stripped it down and cleaned all the buttons and such. noticed there is a little hint of brown tint on the inside (thinking it must be from smoking??) i noticed some kind of glue, or liquid, or stain outlining everything on the boards. one guess is its some sort of glue/finish they used during production, OR this guy spilled something all over the entire unit, OR its from heavy smoking, OR its from humid temperatures? i'm wonder if either you guys can identify what it is or vouch that its normal (on the earlier mpc 1k's) would you be concerned?:

it's funny cuz a part of me looks at it one way and thinks its user inflicted, and another part of me can look at it and assume it's normal

i see what ur saying, it does look like something was spilled on it.....

even if a piece of electronics gets wet, all you really have to do is let it dry thoroughly and most of the time it will be ok. so if its dry now, it shouldnt be a problem. is it working? good. you did buy it from GC so you have a way to talke it back...

try wetting your finger and rubbing an area where theres a stain. does it get sticky?

thanks man. i wet my finger a bit and rubbed it, if there i a taste or stickyness i could not tell, and it didn't seem like it was really budging. so i suppose if this is some sort of spill or anything user oriented then this is the best case scenario haha. my only real concern is how this baby runs thru hours of use. i really hope i won't have a problem but only one way to find out... this mother fckr only has TWO of the bottom rubber nubs still on. was this dude running a marathon??

Your biggest problem is the fact that your rockin the old pads... MpcStuff will help with that problem, but it will cost you $180...

oddly enough these are well well used pads. like tinted up in person. they play great! i was going thru setting the pad velocities and some i had to make really sensitive and some were at like "8" and still way too sensitive. but hell, it works like a charm.

They all do at the start. Believe me Akai would not have released a "pad fix" if there was nothing wrong with the original pads. Hopefully they will last a long time for you, but one of your concerns was about marathon sessions. If that is the case, they won't last long. Just to warn you in advance. We've all gone through it. First stage is denial...

anybody stop to think that not all pcb's are the same color. some darker than others. especially if akai found another vendor that reduced the overall build cost of the unit. there are different revisions of the mpc1000. and most hardware vendors make changes like this through out the life cycle of unit to reduce cost and retail so the life span is longer. thats probably all this is.

yeah! that's what i was thinking too. it obviously looks different than other boards (so assume it is some kind of glue) this was prolly one of the first boards they used cuz its freakin dinosaur lookin. not fresh at all haha.

it seems to be dryed coka cola or whisky-cola !
you ve to burn it with an open flame to really know what it is

yea map gas torch otta take care of that fast like.

I wouldn't worry too much about the 'gunk' on the PCB... it is very possible that it is just a side effect of the manufacturing process and could be rosen that is used around the solder joints.

looks like water damage to me.

My MPC 1000 is the same like yours inside.. I buy it from ebay / wet London haha.. it looks too old.. but works well.. don't worry..
