So, I've got an MPC500 - love it, FTW - but I find the stretching facility on it somewhat, er, not good! When I take a sample and shift it down in tempo by around 20bpm, I get weird aliasing and artifacting going on.

This might be a stupid question, but is the stretching on the 1k / 2.5k better, or is it just the same set of algorithms ported over? I want to get a bigger MPC later in the year, but need it to handle sample shifting better!

Thoughts?

I think that depends on sample you use. It's easier to fasten the sample than slow it down. If you can't afford bigger MPC atm try software sampler and you will see how it works in comparision to your small MPC. I'm also corious how software sampler works in comparision to MPC 4K Z4/8 sampler built in, but have no opportunity to do it :/.

the time stretching/ pitch shifting on the 1000 and 2500 is identical- and i assume its also the same as the 500 time stretching.In any case- time streching on the 1k is the last reason to buy it!.... its probably best to use it as a rough guide while composing and then use some software timestretching on the original samples when you get the time.

+1 In my opinion software timestretching is FAR superior than the TS of all the mpc's (well the ones ive seen in action 1000, 2000xl, 2500, 4000). In my own situations i experience less sound degradation when going the software route.

Logic has excellent time stretching built in. And right in its EXS 24 sampler as well.

And I think the best plugin I have used for TS is iZotope Radius, you can get quite a nice long stretch.
Hardware TSing is a little more limited due to a massive difference in processing speed I would imagine, I would guess that that it could do it, it would just take forever.

Either way 20bpm is a pretty big jump, may be hard to avoid some artifacts. Probably need to run it through software, which is what the MPC is doing as well just for the record, it is just a different algorithm.

Logic has 4-5 different timestretch algorithms built in. Let me know if you want something stretched I would be glad to see what I can do. At least get you in the range you were looking for.
