Stand Alone Unit

I am completely new to the game, and am looking to get my first mpc. I really dislike using computers and so I am looking at getting a stand alone unit (making music just off of the machine).

Is this possible or do I have to have a some computer thing?

If it is possible, which MPC should I get.

I feel you about making music with computers.

If you're new to the game most people will recommend the 1000 with the JJ OS and padfix...

Dunno much about the 1000 but you'll probably still need:
- a daw to track your beats with
- an audio interface

And if you want to sample from vinyl:
- a turntable
- a preamp (in a mixer, or standalone)

All depends what exactly you want to do and what your budget is.

mpc1000 with JJ OS or if you have the money look at the 2500.

with an mpc you don't need to use a computer to make complete tracks.
anyway, it gives you the freedom to integrate a computer as much or little into your production as works for you.

once you've loaded your samples, you can work just with the mpc as a stand alone unit.

but first you'll need samples - records and a turntable are the gold standard. but any audio source can be used. or download samples. if you want to make good beats you need to make good samples.

i also find a synth useful for sampling.

MPCs are pretty much stand alone as you can get. You can even have a set up of just an MPC, cd player and headphones or those little boom boxes with the line in and out.

and you dont even need a DAW. you could just resample the track in the mpc.

thats what i do. but its not by choice, no money. i would rather use a DAW.

If the above is true thene how do you know you dislike computers for producing and you will be able to get down with MPC or any other standalone unit for that matter?

What features are you looking for, are you keyboard player or sampler ?

Add an effect unit and you've got what DJ Shadow produced the whole of Endtroducing on if my memory serves.

Can you attach an effect unit straight to the mpc and make sounds using only those two?

well yea, the mpc can make sounds all by itself (as long as it has samples on it).
an effect unit will just help you add different flavors to your sounds with different effects and sound modulations.

send sounds out of mpc into effects unit, then resample into mpc.
