How about this...?

Hey, last night I had an idea, but didn't tried it yet, so I wanna know your opinion:

Besides my loved MPC500, I have an SP-505 wich I bought recently. I'm diggin' it, altough it has some limitations, the small number of banks and small memory. By the other hand, it has good efects, a good isolator, 3 sample modes for mono (standard, long, and hi-fi), and has the ability to apply the effects when sampling (it's handy because saves some time resampling).

What I'm thinking is: Can I plug my turntable into my SP-505, plug the out's of the 505 into the in's of my MPC500? This way I could sample,chop, and sequence in the mpc500, and still apply the 505 effects! My question is, having the sound going through an intermediate sampler, would it make it worse?

Maybe I'm asking a basic question, but I've never plugged 2 samplers...Hell, I've never had 2 samplers before, lol...

not positive, but you'll still probably need a mixer/amp for your turn table.

as long as the sp505 has a through mode you should be able to use it as an effects device from the mixer out to your mpc 500 in.

you could then sample on the mpc500 from the sp505 output.

If you wanted to get a bit more creative, you could probably hook up the two devices through midi and use the mpc 500 to controlo the sp505.

As for the mixer, I have one but don't need it as my turntable is a Numar PT-01 and doesn't need amplification. And yes, the SP-505 has a through mode, I mean, it has an "external source" button that let us listen to what's going in the in's, so I guess it's ok!

Yeah, I guess I could hook them up with MIDI, but that way the mpc500 would use the sp505 memory, and that is no good because it only has 16 banks for samples...
But, using the MPC500 as a main machine, I'd still have its 2Gb CF card, and an almost infinite number of banks/samples!
The only problem "physical" with this combo is that when I want to hear my sp505's beats, I'll have to switch some cables, or put the mpc500 in record mode...

As for the sound...that's where my question lies...would it be ok to run the sound trough the sp505 when sampling in the 500?

This is like the 5th thread I've answered on this topic this week, But I got the same set up myself so I gotta represent.

Yes its a powerful combination. Its so fun when the music going thru the 505 can be manipulated and sampled into the 500. The effects I mainly use are Pitch Shift, Isolator, Voice Cancellation, Octaves, Overdrive and Lo-Fi. And as long the 500 is receiving a signal from the input, you can plug in whatever you want. My route is: Turntable to Pre-Amp to SP505 to MPC500 to ESX-1. I only use the esx for the analog sound of the vacuum tubes.

Do what you feel, there's no right or wrong way to make beats.

That's what I wanted to hear! Yeah, those effects are dope, I can picture myself working with those SP effects but without concerning if I'm wasting too much banks! =)
Maybe I'll also try to chop one or two loops and sample them to the mpc, to see if chopping is quicker that way..

505 got wave display and bpm detection, so yeah, chopping would be quicker like that. But its timestretch sucks. Seems like it was built for drums.

I still have my 505. despite the fisherprice looks, it was still the best of the SPs. The 606 has better hardware, better pads etc but took away some of the features of the 505. They are all good live machines, but near useless in the studio (can't even save FX settings). That's why I now have a MPC500 as well. I'm selling my 606 and keeping the 505 for old time's sake.

From memory, the 505 can take a direct input from a turntable.

Yup, the time stretching is a lot better on the mpc500! I'm using the timestretch on the 505 only when the desired bpm is close to the original bpm. As for the chopping, I'm guessing is similar to the mpc process!
