you should be straight, I know many cats that build their own
PC's and have no problems, make sure you have plenty of RAM
and processing

I have a digi002 rack that runs on a pc I built and I have no problems. The PC is a 2.4 P4 with 512ddr, adaptec firewire card, firewire hd. I haven't had any problems yet even with high track counts.

Just go visit the DUC (Digidesign User Group) and read the specs for what works and what does work.
You should be able to easily build and config a working PC by following the info that's available there.
You can also find info on what Macs work well and which ones don't.
