dear all,

kindly help me as my mpc5000 (OS2) continues giving me this error message when I try to save my work on the internal hard disk ("save entire memory" or "save all programs and samples"):

"Error - (HD) Name already exists"

if I save on the CF card the message doesn't come out... all seems right, but if I try to load the project I saved:

"Error - (VEng) No return from Query"

I already tried changing the name of the programs, but I still get the error message...

did you try re-installing OS. then re-intializing the entire system?

How long have you had the unit before it started doing this?

might have to open that baby up to see if memory is sitting correctly...

Try saving entire memory and choosing to create a new folder. Give that new folder a unique name.

thanks for your answers!

@ diegoeskryptic:

I've tried to initialize the unit (power on + erase) but had no result. I've not yet tried to reinstall OS2. do you think this may help?

regarding the memory, I never had problems with it... it's always recognized as 192 mb

I've my baby since a couple of months now... but I had this problem also with OS1 one time.

I've not told you that this problem happens just with one project, If I save a new project or I load a previous one I have no issues at all!!!!

@ askia:

I've already tried all kind of name / folder / subfolder renominations but I always get the HD error... the only way to save without getting the error message in to save to CF... but then I'm not able to load the project!!!!

that could be your problem right there... are there any files within that project that have a funny name, like kicksnare_/? Or probably a wave file which sample rate is too high like 24/192 or something crazy... if its only one project, then that should be easy to tackle the problem.

mmmhhh.... If a sample can be loaded in memory, tweaked and used in a kit, why I shouldn't be able to save it on HD? and why if I save it on the CF then I shouldn't be able to load the project?

I'm wondering what's the meaning of the error message....

thx anyway for your help!

I'll try this evening, but I don't think it will help since this problem happened also with OS1...

I hope I'm the only one person still having problems after the OS2 release... I'm not so happy with my mpc...

Do you have any files or folders that have a period ( . ) as part of the name? Or when renaming a file, did you delete the file extension (.wav, .50v, etc)?

Also, can you upload the offending files so I can download them to test them out?

hi guys,

thx for your cooperation. I finally found what's the problem with this project. Two of the samples have very similar names, something like "h1_ii_i" and "H1_II_II". I have renamed one of them and then I was able to save the project on the HD without issues.

The strange thing is that these files are from the Countryside Kit that was bundled with the MPC 5000.

I have said that I had this problem also with OS1... and also in that project I used one of the programs preinstalled in the MPC hard drive. Isn't weird?!

all the best,

Hi Cat3!
I started my MPC era with a MPC1K in 2004.
I remember that we had similar problems with mpc1k. the file names are limited to 8 CAPITAL letters on CF cards by the FAT16 format standard, and no space between caracters are allowed. If you import a file name longer than 8 caracters, only the first 8 will be saved. So think twice before naming your files, so that you won't have several folders with files names like (Snare-1). when you load up your projects into internal memory of a mpc, all samples will placed into ONE folder. Each sample has to have a unique file name.
If you plan to move files between HD and CF cards, stick to FAT16 filename standard!

hi jocks,

all is clear about the FAT16 file system, I guessed there was something like that to explain the matter... even if, to be honest, I cannot understand why the problem happened when I was trying to save to the HD a kit that I loaded from the HD itself... ???

anyway, for the future I know that if I get this error message I have to search for files with similar names and rename one of them. the important thing is not to loose other projects!!!!

thx again for your explanation!!!

i've had the same problem. a couple of kits on the mpc hd have some samples with identical names. you can load them separately, but when you save then with the save all *** commands, the mpc abruptly ends the saving process as soon as it encounters identical named samples, so not everything is saved and the thing cannot be loaded again afterwards... in fact this is a bug for the bug list: the mpc should not abort the saving process just because of identical named samples, it should continue with the rest of items to save...
