calling all the 'tech-heads' on the site.

Just realised something a little bit strange. I was playing around with a friend's MPC2000Xl last weekend and a striking difference between the responsiveness of the Note Repeat function on the 2000XL and the 1000 became immediately apparent.

To explain : I was using the Note Repeat on a Hi Hat ... when tapping the pad in a singular rythmic way, the response was immediate on the 2000XL ... so, in other words, it took down the rythum exactly. I tried the same on my 1000 only to discover that it was far more sluggish and no where as quick to trigger individual taps whilst holding the repeat bottong down > ?

Any ideas ???

On the 1000 (all OS versions) note repeat will only let you trigger a note at the specified quantize setting, as you've noticed.

I don't have an XL to try it on, but I'm surprised if it's not the same way. It would be cool if tapping the pad w/ note repeat always triggers the pad, but holding triggers on the quantize setting.

Can anyone who owns a 2000XL verify?

No, Elevated, sorry I probably didn't explain myself very well. Yous stated : 'On the 1000 (all OS versions) note repeat will only let you trigger a note at the specified quantize setting, as you've noticed.

Yep, I fully understand this, but what I meant is the following : When holding down the Repeat key you can still tap the pad and it will produce a single beat unless you really apply pressure and hold the pad down. So, as I did on the 2000XL, I was able to string togetner some lovely little intricate hi-hat riffs by tapping the pad lightly for a single note and then applying more pressure for the repeat to kick in. On the 1000, however, this ability is much less easy to achieve. I think messsing around with the pad settings may somewhat improve this effect, but there seems to be a clear difference between the two modles in this regard ?

it took down the rythum exactly.

so, are you talking about TIMING or VELOCITY RESPONSE....? sounds like you're talking about the latter, which has nothing to do with the time in which the note is triggered

No, Nym, that's not what I mean either ... sorry, I'm not explaining this very well today.

Ok, hold down your note repeat ( say set it to 1/16 ). Now tap out on any pad something like : ta ... ta, ta ..ta..ta..ta......ta,ta,ta,ta ....ta,ta ...ta. You won't generally be able to do it on the 1000, yet on the 20000XL you can ?

What you will get with the 1000 is simply : ta,ta,ta,ta,ta,ta,ta .... or whatever you have the repeat set to.

Yeh, I know, Elavated .... but it was the best I could conjure up last night - was running on empty after two days of no sleep virtually ( not good, as I'm not as young as I once was ! ).

What I meant to say was whilst holding down the repeat key, you could still tap out a rythum that would include single taps as well as the repeated taps on the 2000XL, but I couldn't achieve the same thing on the 1000 ( hope this makes a little more sense ).

No I think understand you now-- what you described is something that your 1000 should be capable of. I do it on mine all the time.

I think what you're noticing is the more sensitive pad response of the XL, which makes it easier.

I think I see what you mean. When you have the note repeat on, if you hit the pad it doesn't allow you to play out of quantization. This is something that really keeps me from using note repeat. If you tap the pad, often you won't get the note you want at all. It would be better if the pad played the note then repeated at the nearest quantized setting if held. Even if this is not what your talking about, this is what I think it should do. That's how it works on my Fantom, so I know it's possible. Another thing I always thought would be cool is if you had the ability to choose the pads that you want to repeat. Say you have pads 8, 12, and 16 set up so that if you hold them they repeat, but the others are play normaly...

oh, i get it! i think
in the 2000xl NOTE REPEAT with tc/on lets you record notes off the grid?
pretty cool
i thought it was like the 1000/2500 - i never use note repeat cuz it sucks and i'd rather play it myself
audio examples of both would be excellent to make sure we're all on the same page

Wudsibe and Nym .... yeh, this is exactly what I mean ( thanks for getting my eords out for me  ).

Yeh, it's odd that the 2000XL has no problem in doing this, yet the 1000 won't have any of it ?!!
